#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 25th January 2022 - Post 9918
Hello lovelies! Itās Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood pink-tutu-wearing time traveller, back with another instalment of our #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History blog. Today, weāre stepping back into the past to uncover the fascinating history of tutus and how they've evolved from humble beginnings to the iconic symbol of ballet we know and adore today!
It's chilly here in Paris - oh, I forgot to tell you, today I'm visiting the Paris Opera, the epitome of ballet history and glamour. This gorgeous city is always such an inspiration, and seeing all these incredible performers in their spectacular tutus reminds me why I'm obsessed!
Iāve already booked tickets to see "Giselle" later this afternoon. Now, speaking of "Giselle", guess who just happens to be the reason why tutus have become the quintessential ballet costume? Yep, none other than the romantic ballerina, Marie Taglioni!
Imagine this: it's 1841 and the Parisian Opera is buzzing with excitement for the premiere of "Giselle". Everyone's eager to see the incredible Marie Taglioni. And she arrives in a costume that sets the world on fire! A diaphanous, calf-length skirt with several layers of tulle that floated and fluttered like a whisper on the stage. This, ladies and gentlemen, was the revolutionary "tutu" and it instantly became a sensation.
Before Marie's revolutionary tutu, ballerinas wore long, cumbersome skirts that restricted their movements, hindering them from performing leaps, turns, and graceful steps. But Marieās vision - a vision of ethereal elegance and breathtaking freedom ā redefined ballet, and tutus became the embodiment of grace, femininity, and effortless artistry.
It's absolutely incredible how that one moment in history shaped the entire course of ballet fashion! The tutus became iconic, evolving over the years to different lengths, from the knee-length Romantic tutu, like Marie's, to the shorter, frillier tutu that became more prevalent during the Victorian Era. These little tulle masterpieces continued to enchant and inspire ballet enthusiasts worldwide.
Did you know, just like any fashion trend, the tutu's evolution wasn't a straight line! The 20th century saw more experimentation, more freedom of movement with the tutu evolving into its modern forms: the āClassical Tutuā and the āPanto Tutuā that are so iconic in ballet today! Itās just mind-blowing how one costume has changed so dramatically over time, showcasing not only ballet's elegance, but also the boundless possibilities of fashion!
Oh, the joys of being a time travelling tutu fanatic! Who wouldn't love to witness the incredible evolution of ballet costumes first-hand? Now, where was I... oh yes! Speaking of time travel and Paris... I couldn't resist taking a trip on the lovely Parisian Metro this morning, in a lovely fuchsia tutu, of course. It's always fascinating to see how people dress and behave.
While many think tutus are meant only for the stage, I've always believed tutus belong everywhere! A bit of tulle can add that sprinkle of magic and whimsical charm to your everyday outfit. You know, a dash of joy!
For today, my #TutuTuesday inspiration is a fluffy pink tulle tutu and a bold red lipstick, maybe with a Parisian beret to top it all off - an absolute dream look for this city of enchantment. Don't you just love how a tiny touch of tutu can elevate even the simplest of looks?!
