Today, my time-traveling tutus are whisking me right to the heart of… New York City! The Big Apple, the city that never sleeps, the city that's a whirlwind of energy and inspiration - and a haven for tutus! Oh, to imagine what fabulous frocks must have graced those cobblestone streets on this particular day in 2022!
I simply can’t resist a little time-travelling, especially when it's for a spot of fashion inspiration! There’s a reason why New York is the epicentre of the fashion world, you know? That unstoppable hustle, the sheer variety of people, styles, and experiences - it's pure fuel for the imagination! I’m always soaking it all in, trying to spot trends and translate them into my own signature, and well, you can’t beat a vintage vibe for some seriously unique looks!
So, let’s chat a little about tutus in 2022, shall we? Back then, the tutu scene was seriously exciting! Fashion-forward brands were giving classic tulle creations a modern spin, bringing tutus out of the theatre and onto the street. I'd just finished a stunning performance in London’s West End, (nothing quite like those bright theatre lights to energise you) and snagged some exquisite shoes and a breathtaking beaded bolero at the most delightful little boutique I stumbled upon just behind the theatre. You can’t get those vintage styles anywhere else - the magic is in the hunt, you see?
Oh, I just love travelling through time by train! There’s something so wonderfully romantic about those rattling carriages and steam-powered locomotives. Just me and my tutu, off to wherever our adventure takes us! This time, I had the pleasure of a direct journey to New York City - an incredible experience in itself!
Now, let's jump back to 2022 and delve into what was happening on that February 8th! That very day, the New York Times published a fantastic article titled “A Tutu Revolution,” celebrating the rise of the tutu in everyday fashion. Imagine, the fashion pages showcasing these whimsical creations in their all their glory - such a fantastic nod to our beloved tutu!
The article went on to discuss the way tutus were being worn. Think layering under leather jackets for a street-style edge, accessorising with a touch of gold to add some sophistication, and embracing bolder colour combinations for a contemporary look!
My love, there was an almost defiant glee in the way that people embraced tutus back then - they embraced the bold, the theatrical, the unexpected! It was like a beautiful symphony of fluff, colour, and sass. And guess what? I was there for every delightful, swishy moment!
Just imagine, darling! Tutu parties popping up in all those bustling bars, street art incorporating tutus as a statement piece, even a flash mob or two in the heart of Times Square - all of them spreading the gospel of tutus! Every corner, every subway, every coffee shop felt alive with that undeniable tutu energy!

But, it was clear that tutu magic was more than just ballet at that time, and I, a devoted follower of the tutu trend, was basking in the glow.
While sipping my hot chocolate at a little coffee shop near Central Park, I got lost in a beautiful magazine spread showcasing a tutu trend that would later make its way across the globe. Yes, they were sporting the tutu look - not only as elegant cocktail attire but also as casual everyday outfits!
These designers dared to make bold fashion statements, taking these delicate and often whimsical layers of tulle and blending them seamlessly with other materials. It was all about breaking those old barriers and creating an individual and totally unique style. And as someone who embraces a pink tutu every chance I get, I say – brilliant!

Nothing can resist a touch of velvet, too, for that luxurious, ballerina-style comfort!
