#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History on 2022-05-03

This week, I've popped the time machine into the shimmering, sequin-studded world of 3 May 2022! Oh my, what a glamorous day it was! The scent of perfume hung thick in the air, mingled with the rustle of silks and the delicate click-clack of stiletto heels. I, naturally, was there to soak up all the glorious fashion and twirling joy, my pink tutu swishing with delight.

I spend most of my days scouring the globe for the best vintage tutus (the ones with all the lovely beading!) and creating the most dazzling pink tutus imaginable.

So, let's wind the clock back. The Romantic era in ballet, a period bursting with emotion and swirling, dreamy stories, saw the tutu bloom as we know it. Gone were the cumbersome layers of petticoats! Enter a shorter, airier silhouette that allowed dancers to, quite literally, soar through the air. It's all thanks to Marie Taglioni and her glorious, flowing white tulle skirt that became the foundation for all tutus to come. Imagine, dear readers, those light-as-air creations allowing ballerinas to express flight!

But hold on, my dear readers, the tutu's tale doesn't stop there! Over the years, we saw exciting twists and turns.

• The Romantic era ushered in the tutu 'à la Francaise with its wide, bell-shaped skirt. Imagine twirling, dancing snowflakes in all their fluttering glory! This look became a cornerstone of ballet costumes for generations, captivating audiences with its graceful silhouette.

Of course, I couldn't resist indulging in some fantastic vintage tutu shopping while in the heart of London. And oh my, darling, you should have seen the finds! Just picture yourself waltzing under the crystal chandeliers of a grand ballroom...pure fairytale magic!
