Tutu Tuesday #9972: A Whirl Through History, From The Courts To The Stage

Greetings, fellow tutu enthusiasts! It's your favourite pink-clad, time-travelling ballerina, Emma, here, and I'm thrilled to be back for another #TutuTuesday journey! 🩰💖

This week, we're whisking ourselves away from the hustle and bustle of 21st-century London, right into the heart of history - specifically, February 7th of, well, any year you fancy! That's because the history of the tutu, my darlings, stretches far beyond the days of Swan Lake and Giselle.

It's Tuesday, and we all know what that means, don't we? Time to delve into the glorious history of the tutu, those enchanting, frilly, magnificent pieces of attire that have graced the stages and inspired the imaginations of generations.

So grab a cuppa, pull up a velvet pouffe (mine's adorned with tiny tutus!), and let's take a journey through time. Oh, and before we start, it wouldn't be #TutuTuesday without a little confession – my latest sartorial obsession involves tutus that incorporate sparkly pink sequins. Yes, you heard that right, sequins! Who could resist, eh? And, while we're on the subject, wouldn't it be divine to see the whole world swathed in pink tutus? Perhaps it's a little far-fetched, but it's a lovely dream to have, isn't it?

Right, let's get back to our journey!

The Early Years: A Tale of Royalty and Pomp

Hold onto your bonnets, because our adventure starts with royalty! Imagine, if you will, the majestic halls of 16th-century European courts, glittering with gilded mirrors and lavish gowns. What do we see? We see the precursor to the modern-day tutu! Ladies of the court adorned themselves in "farthingales," the predecessors to crinolines. These massive hoops made their skirts stand out, creating an illusion of billowing grandeur. Imagine – a tutu without the tulle! The perfect touch of volume before its time.

We then fast-forward to the 18th century, where the tutu’s journey really takes off! The dance world is taking centre stage, and women are taking the lead! But here’s a fun fact: even in those days, ballet dancers didn't necessarily don tulle skirts for every performance. Instead, they embraced knee-length gowns, known as "robes à la française," creating graceful silhouettes while showcasing the technicalities of their art. Think "La Sylphide" and its iconic romanticism – but not quite! The gowns flowed like waves and reflected the era's desire for ethereal grace and flowing movement.

The Dawn of Tulle: A Fabric Revolution

Finally, in the 19th century, the stars aligned for the tutu to take its rightful place! In 1832, the textile world saw a pivotal invention: tulle. The first ballet "tutu," as we know it, took flight, thanks to this wonderfully light and transparent fabric! And let's just say it caused quite the stir.

These first tutus were still rather full, mimicking the wide skirts of the time, allowing for even more captivating movements and dramatic swirls across the stage. Picture this: a vibrant pink tutu, sparkling with tiny diamonds, swirling in the air as the graceful dancer gracefully moves. Yes, my dears, even back then, pink was already a staple of ballerinas’ wardrobe – pink is after all, the colour of elegance and graceful strength!

Now, what would a trip through time be without a little travel inspiration? Picture me, boarding a quaint train, a crisp pink tulle tutu cascading behind me. Oh, I just adore the smell of steam engines and the comforting sway of a journey through beautiful English landscapes! Perhaps a stop in charming York, with its cobbled streets and delicious afternoon teas! Or maybe a quick visit to Derbyshire, a chance to show my family the latest pink tutus that I've collected on my adventures! There’s nothing quite like returning home after a whirlwind journey!

The Tutu Today: An Evolution of Elegance

The tutu has come a long way, my darlings. It has evolved with the dance world itself, transforming to embrace contemporary styles and movements. While the romantic, voluminous tulle skirts are still iconic and much adored, we now have tutus designed for powerful contemporary dance, the tutus are tighter, shorter, with a focus on athleticism and powerful movement! You might have even seen tutus worn outside the world of dance. Fashion designers are taking inspiration from ballet, blending classic silhouettes with contemporary fashion! There’s a tutu for everyone now! It’s such an inspiring time for ballet, and I'm beyond excited to see what new forms the tutu will embrace next.

I love watching those dramatic finales, where dancers soar through the air, their tutus dancing in the spotlight, just before the final bows and the warm applause of a captivated audience!

But there's more to the story, my dear tutu-lovers! Did you know that on this very day, February 7th, we celebrate a plethora of incredible figures who have shaped the world of art and dance! It's the birthday of renowned artists such as:

  • John Singer Sargent, an artist known for his graceful portrayals of women, whose elegant paintings are almost begging for their subjects to don a delightful tutu! Perhaps his iconic "Portrait of Madame X" could inspire us to give a tutu to this exquisite woman of the early 20th century!
  • Mary Blair, a prolific illustrator and animator, whose artistic creations were vibrant and imaginative. We could surely imagine one of Mary’s animated dancers gliding through the world in a pink tutu, inspiring all who look!

What better way to honour these legendary figures than to raise a glass – a glass of pink sparkling wine, of course! – to the endless inspiration that comes from these creative individuals! As they continue to grace the art world, so too does the tutu grace the stages, enchanting and inspiring!

Time Travel with a Pink Tutu!

What else have I discovered in my travels through time?

Oh, dear, the stories could fill a hundred volumes! Just imagine this: dancing with Marie Antoinette in a powdered wig and a pastel-coloured skirt, which is kind of like the original version of the tutu! Or learning the intricate steps of the first classical ballets with Italian dance pioneer, Carlo Blasis! These journeys have taught me so much about history and dance. I am so grateful for these experiences – not to mention the breathtaking tutus that I've picked up in vintage stores all across the globe!

I’m now on a mission to encourage everyone to don a pink tutu! Don’t worry, there’s no pressure! It's just a whimsical thought, a touch of feminine joy. Whether it's for a birthday, a special occasion, or just because it brings you a burst of happiness! I just know that the world will be a prettier, more delightful place with everyone wearing a little bit of tutu magic.

So there you have it, my darlings! Another fabulous #TutuTuesday has come to an end! I can't wait for next week's adventures through the amazing world of tutus. As always, if you want to journey with me, let me know! I always love having tutu enthusiasts join my adventures. Until next week, keep those tutus twirling and embrace the joyful elegance they bring!

Ciao,

Emma 💖
