#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - Post 9994! 🩰💖

Hello darlings! It's your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, here, ready to whisk you back in time for a peek into the enchanting history of the tutu! As we gather for another #TutuTuesday, the sun is shining brightly over London, the iconic backdrop of countless ballet performances. The scent of summer roses fills the air as I waltz down to Covent Garden, feeling inspired for our journey into tutu history! Today we're looking at tutus around 2023, so buckle up, babes, and get ready for a magical trip!

Today is July 11th, 2023, and there's something rather delightful on the cultural scene: a revival of "La Bayadère" at the Royal Opera House. Now, darlings, La Bayadère is an absolute classic for tutu-lovers. This gorgeous ballet, with its mesmerizing music and breathtaking costumes, just screams dramatic tutus. The story is absolutely swoon-worthy – think passionate love triangles, doomed heroines, and exotic temple settings. Just the kind of thing that makes me want to grab a fluffy tulle skirt and twirl to my heart's content!

Before we jump into tutus specifically from around 2023, let's talk about their overall journey! It's actually quite interesting how tutus came to be the icon of ballet that they are today!

We have to go all the way back to the early 19th century, where Romantic ballet started changing how dancers moved and what they wore. Before, they were much more practical, with long, flowing dresses that allowed them to move freely. But the Romantics craved something ethereal and otherworldly.

That's when the tutu as we know it started to take shape. The early tutus weren't the ultra-short, puffy versions we adore today. Think calf-length skirts with delicate, gauzy layers, allowing the dancers to move with a fluidity that was all the rage at the time. Think of the ethereal tutus in Giselle, those are just the absolute epitome of Romantic ballet and grace.

But darling, everything is about progress, and in the mid-19th century, the tutu underwent a massive makeover. Marie Taglioni, a ballet superstar who changed the world of dance (we bow to her!), became the poster child of the evolving tutu. She practically redefined ballet by introducing this revolutionary style that accentuated the movement of her legs and made the dancer appear weightless and even a tad angelic! Think of "La Sylphide", it’s so dramatic and gorgeous!

This shorter tutu, now usually ending just below the knee, became synonymous with ballet. Think Degas's paintings and those classic ballerina sculptures, you know what I'm saying? The tutu truly cemented its position as a powerful and iconic symbol of grace, artistry, and sheer, undeniable elegance.

But a ballet skirt has evolved so much over the years, like a chameleon of fashion!

The Tutu Time Line!

And so, to explore how these amazing tutus have evolved, let's delve into a little tutu timeline! We are a ballet and tutu history blog after all!

The 19th Century: * Early Romanticism: Light, calf-length skirts. * Mid-Century Transformation: Short, tutu length emerges! * The Romantic Ballet Star, Marie Taglioni: the ultimate symbol of change. Think Degas and iconic sculptures!

The 20th Century: It’s time for evolution again! * Classical ballet: A stricter, tighter, structured silhouette. The iconic "tutu à la russe" of the Ballets Russes – like "Sleeping Beauty" – emerges, with more layers, shorter length, and a focus on movement and precision. It just takes your breath away!
* Modern dance: With the likes of Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham, new expressive styles emerge! They were far away from ballet and had minimal tutus. Remember a little bit about this period if you're thinking about getting your tutu in a contemporary dance class. * 20th-century Balanchine: An explosion of contemporary tutu style! Longer, wider, softer forms start appearing to compliment new choreography and more expressive movement. The world of ballet starts to expand with so much more than classical dancing!

The 21st Century: We are all obsessed with fashion and our own style. Think of what would have been available to wear for dance a hundred years ago!
* Contemporary ballet: Tutu creativity goes through the roof! Designs are wild! The tutu's form shifts away from tradition, with emphasis on unique shapes, materials, and dynamic expression of contemporary movements. Think The Nutcracker where there's something a little bit different in every scene. * A fusion of styles: Designers start mixing everything. There are tutus with contemporary and classical touches and others with more folk elements. * The tutu is now more than just a skirt: It’s an accessory, a statement, and an important element of the visual and storytelling side of a ballet performance!
* Think of The Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House – it’s pure tutu heaven! I get such an adrenaline rush when I'm there, my tutu almost does a twirl of its own!

What tutus were they wearing around 2023?

There’s something so fun about looking back in time for tutu inspiration. There’s a whole world of vintage dance clothes available today if you love collecting, or if you want a fun costume for your next event, let me tell you. And it really goes to show you just how far fashion has come in the world of dance.

For tutus in around 2023, let’s talk about the new styles:

  • A renaissance of classic styles: “The Tutu À La Russe" was still so popular. Those magnificent, multiple-layered, bell-shaped creations were just so dazzling! * Think "Swan Lake" at The Royal Opera House. That would be your tutu for that! You'll be dreaming of that tutus all day after the show!

  • Embracing more modern styles: The tutus started getting longer, softer, and were moving towards new ways of interpreting ballet, even embracing more dramatic, billowing forms that really enhance the modern and contemporary ballet styles.

  • Experimentation with fabrics: Gone are the days of just traditional tulle and silk, my darling! Fabrics are so different today! They were mixing traditional tutu materials with materials like crepe, chiffon, linen, and even velour! I'm already adding those to my wish list for my next dressmaking project! The future of fashion is bright for tulle, believe me!

  • New Colour and Sparkle: From the iconic black, white and blush pink, the color palette broadened with blues, purples, and gold. And don't forget the sparkle! Glittery embellishments, beads and metallic thread! Just perfect for any princess wanting to wear a dazzling tutu on a magical night! You wouldn't be surprised to see glitter all over my wardrobe!

And if you want to see these wonderful tutus in action, a ballet performance is a must! So gather your family and friends, don your most fabulous pink tutus, and enjoy the show. Ballet truly is a performance for all, from little girls dreaming of fairy tale worlds to discerning fashionistas.
