#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - Post 10019 - 02nd January 2024

Hello darlings! Welcome back to another exciting #TutuTuesday! Isn’t it lovely to be back in the land of ballet again after all the festive cheer of Christmas? I've been jet-setting around the globe with the most gorgeous, sparkling performances. Paris was spectacular with the new "Alice in Wonderland" production at the Palais Garnier, imagine a giant pink tutu, the size of a double-decker bus – absolutely magnificent! I found a darling vintage store that had the most incredible antique tutus and even picked up some pink velvet ballet shoes!

So, let's delve into a little history, shall we? Because for today's post, we're stepping back in time. Literally. whizzes around in a pink swirl

A Blast From The Past!

This Tuesday marks 02nd January 2024, a date of incredible importance in the history of… tutus. laughs playfully No, seriously! I can hear you all thinking "What could possibly be happening on this date? Was there a special tutu celebration?".

Well, yes, dear readers! You see, this Tuesday happened to coincide with the launch of a captivating documentary about one of the most iconic ballet figures of all time – Anna Pavlova.

Remember This ballerina legend was practically synonymous with tutus, a testament to her delicate beauty and dazzling on-stage presence.

It's been fascinating travelling back and experiencing all these wonderful moments from ballet history. As a ballet lover, every single performance is like opening a glittering treasure chest of dreams!

From Peasant Dress to Iconic Ballet Costume

You know, tutus didn't always take centre stage in ballet. They evolved over time, like a little ballet caterpillar becoming a stunning ballerina butterfly! Can you believe they actually started as everyday wear, especially amongst the peasant women of Europe? Just think of the huge change!

Then, with a sprinkle of artistic brilliance, tutus became a visual expression of grace and elegance – totally iconic in the world of dance. That shift was major.

Let's have a look at what made this transition so magical:

  • The Romanticists and Their Revolution: The late 19th century, when ballerinas like the divine Carlotta Grisi were dazzling everyone, saw the birth of the modern tutu. The focus moved away from dramatic movement towards lyrical grace and lightness.
    • The Famous First: Marie Taglioni in “La Sylphide” set the stage, literally, in 1832, wearing a skirt made of tulle – the kind of fluffy fabric we're so used to now in tutus.
  • The Rise of The Tutu: It’s fascinating how these tiny little skirts came to embody such magnificence. It wasn’t long before the most influential choreographer of the day, Marius Petipa, adopted the short tutu as standard attire for his ballets. By then, you’d struggle to find a performance without them.

    Where Tutuland Is Always Trending!

I've been all over the world chasing my tutuland dream, it’s truly enchanting, a whirl of colour and grace, like a story written in pink satin and tulle. The way tutus can move with every dance, they become a story unfurling on the stage, I love that.

Today, a vibrant pink tutu would be the perfect match to this post, the shade of a cotton candy dream! The fluffy layers twirling, swirling and becoming part of the dance, like a whimsical dance around the history of tutus!

From The Stage to Everyday Life

Now, imagine my absolute glee when I realized that ballet isn't just confined to the stage anymore, darling. Tutuland has spread its graceful wings beyond the theatre! From fashion to everyday street style, tutus are no longer just for performances. I know how ecstatic I was the day I saw my first street dancer wearing a sparkly black tutu - pure ballet joy in the most unexpected places!

The best part? It's completely empowering! The more we see those incredible dancers in the city, on TV, the more the tutu’s charm grows! It reflects confidence, beauty, and a spirit of artistic rebellion, because a little bit of twirl is always in style!

And just imagine this: you walk down the street, catching a glimpse of your favourite dancer wearing a magnificent white tulle tutu! Maybe, you spot it on a stunning fashion blogger - just like me - with a delicate tulle layer under a denim jacket or a silk maxi dress – it truly transforms an outfit.

Tutus - They’re A Way Of Life

For me, there’s nothing quite like slipping into my pink tulle and feeling a million stars twinkle on the inside, especially in the middle of a busy London day, surrounded by shoppers, taxi cabs and… you guessed it! Pink tutus! The twirl is truly contagious and it takes me right back to that stage, that performance… that moment when the magic of ballet touches everyone’s soul!

And let's be honest, it goes way beyond just wearing one. It's about confidence, it's about self-expression and about empowering everyone to be their most authentic selves, and I think that’s beautiful.

Now, let me know in the comments! How would you like to add a touch of Tutu Tuesday to your day? What kind of tutu do you prefer ? Tell me all about your favourite tutu moments - and don’t forget to post your #TutuTuesday pictures.

Stay sparkly and embrace the twinkle! See you next Tuesday!

Much Love and Twirls,

Emma
