#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: Post 10024

Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, darlings! It's me, Emma, your ever-so-slightly-obsessed ballerina blogger, and oh, how my tutu twirls in delight to welcome you to another edition of #TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History!

Today, we're stepping back in time (metaphorically, of course, though I am considering a real time travel machine... more on that later!), to February 6th, 2024, a day that saw the ballet world positively ablaze with brilliance, and let me tell you, there's no better place to feel the excitement than New York City, where I'm soaking in all the tutus, tiaras and top-notch talent that this wonderful city has to offer.

Now, you know me, I'm a sucker for a good story. So, let's rewind the clock and see what amazing fashion feats the ballerinas were showcasing this day last year!

First on our list, it has to be the enchanting "Sleeping Beauty" performance at the New York City Ballet - a true fairytale, not just in story, but in costume design! From the regal velvet gowns to the dreamy pastel tutus, everything felt like it was straight out of a classic fairytale. I just had to have a pink tulle swirl in the middle of the lobby afterwards, I couldn't help myself!

Speaking of enchanting, let's chat American Ballet Theatre. On this day in 2024, they had the absolute honour of hosting "The Nutcracker," and you bet your bonbons, they brought the magic. I mean, just picturing those snowflakes pirouetting across the stage... it’s enough to send a girl into a swoon. It’s no surprise the Nutcracker has been a constant in ballet since it premiered in 1892, even after the great Rudolf Nureyev famously broke tradition in 1969, using The Nutcracker to take on a flamboyant role and introduce contemporary ballet.

But of course, it's not all about grand performances and world-renowned companies, is it? The sheer beauty of ballet can be found in the most unexpected places. And this February 6th, I stumbled upon a delightful little ballet school right here in New York.

Imagine, this darling, little, almost forgotten gem, housed within an ancient brick building on a bustling street. And there, amongst the echoes of dancing feet, were the tiniest little tutus, barely the size of a butterfly's wing, yet filled with a huge amount of potential. Every pirouette, every leap was an act of pure magic, proving that no matter how big or small the tutu, it's the passion and dedication that really shines through.

Speaking of tutus and passion, I must confess something: I recently got a little, shall we say, carried away at a delightful boutique tucked away in the West Village. You see, there I was, surrounded by swathes of chiffon and delicate lace, when I laid my eyes upon the most incredible, voluminous, rose-coloured tutu. It had just the right amount of shimmer, it was just simply... exquisite!

Let's just say I might have bought two, (okay, maybe three). What can I say, one girl's got to have a little tutu wardrobe diversity. You know how it is, ladies!

Speaking of shopping, I simply had to jet down to Lower Manhattan to indulge in the ultimate fashion experience - *New York's infamous Barneys! You really haven’t seen couture brilliance until you’ve seen a display at Barneys, with the highest of high-fashion couture labels making every garment a work of art. I may have ended up indulging in a pair of crystal-encrusted heels (totally justifiable considering I *needed a new accessory to complete my "Sleeping Beauty" inspired outfit for the evening's show!) The perfect shoe for my evening!

Anyway, darlings, before we get caught up in the glamour (and yes, maybe even the sparkle of some diamond-encrusted tutus!), let's take a moment to truly appreciate the power and artistry of the ballet world. This world that inspires, motivates, and transports us. Let's keep those tutus twirling and our dreams dancing!

Now, you may be asking yourself how this ballerina from that quaint village of Derbyshire, England, manages to be all over the world, dancing between different time periods, you know, living her best life...well, it's a bit of a secret... a magic, secret! (Let's just say a combination of dance performances, and a sprinkle of well, something else, to make it happen).

However, my travels aren't always about catching the newest, most talked-about performance - they’re about the joy of discovery. Finding that hidden gem, that forgotten little ballet school, or stumbling upon a vintage tutu shop tucked away in the backstreets. That's what makes me dance.

Oh, I'm so thrilled about sharing all of this with you, my fabulous Tutu Tuesday community. But enough about my musings! It's time to go and experience another incredible performance… it's my life's work to spread the joy of the dance! (You never know who you’ll meet at a show, and as a firm believer in a tutu a day, a girl’s got to be prepared).

Until next Tuesday, darlings! Remember, life is a dance! Let’s make sure we always have a little sparkle in our step, and a sprinkle of pink in our wardrobe!

With love and pirouettes,

Emma

I’ve been saving up my dancing earnings for a long time so I can finally go back in time for this week’s Tutu Tuesday blog entry! It was an extraordinary year for ballet in 2024! But be warned, dear readers, it’s dangerous. You’re never really sure what’s around the corner.
