#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Ballet Tutu History! (Post #10073)
Greetings, fellow twirling enthusiasts! Emma here, your trusty tutu-clad time traveler, back with another historical adventure. Today, I’m hopping into my time machine (and, naturally, wearing a spectacular pink tulle number, of course!) to journey back to January 14th, 2025, and unravel some tutu-tastic threads of ballet history.
Now, you might be thinking: 2025? That's not that long ago! Well, in the grand scheme of tutu-kind, it is! It's like, the blink of an eye before we’re back to crinolines and powdered wigs (no tutus, sadly!), but enough time for fashion trends to change like the wind. So, grab your teacups, grab a twirl, and join me on this delightful trip to the recent past.
A Touch of Glamour: The Dawn of the TutuLet’s rewind to the very beginning – what did dancers wear before the tutu? Imagine that – the lightness, the grace, the ethereal swish of the skirt... it wasn’t always there. Back in the 1500s, we were talking full skirts and gowns – definitely not conducive to dancing en pointe!
But oh, how times did change!
The tutu we know and love has a fascinating lineage. It evolved, bit by bit, in the 1800s. Think Marie Taglioni – a true style icon of the Romantic era, who brought elegance and grace to ballet with her lighter skirts. We see the same ethereal qualities in our tutus today – those graceful movements made even more dramatic with the wispy skirts.
Speaking of tutus and evolution, 2025 was a year of major fashion breakthroughs, wouldn’t you say? Oh, you can tell I just stepped out of the time machine – the year's biggest fashion event was that Tutu-phoria ball – you just couldn't find a real ballgown to be seen in.
Did you catch Ballet de l'Opera in Paris on January 14th, 2025? It was the hottest ticket in town! I had the honour of catching that one from my front-row seat and, darling, the tutus were stunning. That one took place at the magnificent Paris Opera House - such history and so many glamorous, beautiful tutus! It's a bit like taking a trip back in time (again, lol). I always love a trip to see the ballet in Paris, as it is the city of tutus and the art form itself.
Paris, oh Paris – you really are the best for your couture shops. They always make me feel glamorous with every trip I take to this delightful city.
I remember wandering down the grand Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, and my word! I spied a vintage boutique filled to the brim with incredible tutu designs! It was a treasure trove of feathered skirts and hand-beaded embellishments. Imagine – a tutu from the early 20th century, all that exquisite handwork. I wish I could show you - if you had a glimpse, you'd have loved the swish! Oh my word - I ended up picking out the most incredible light pink silk tutu in the world - I felt like a princess! It has all the history and elegance from the eras we have discussed - what a find, it made all my dreams come true.
Now, 2025 marked a significant change in fashion. Everyone and their mum wanted a tulle frock, and in this day and age of high street couture and tutus for everyday wear, that trend really caught on in 2025, making the dance scene feel even more fun. Imagine walking down the street and seeing everyone rocking a mini tutu as part of their daily outfit. It’s not surprising, given tutus are all about fun and whimsical style!
As for me, 2025’s style icons – well, I’m just thrilled at the fact that it has never really left - even here in 2035! Emma's Tutu Trends, **of course, were totally bang on, even all those years ago! But of course, the year 2025 is famous for all those fantastic dancers like Anna Pavlova! (Of course - you all know of the Pavlova cake and Pavlova dance moves from the *Pavlova ballet).
Don’t you just adore seeing how the ballet influences even fashion in our time?
You can imagine – so many new ballet schools and studios are popping up! You might be interested in The International Tutu Competition which was big back then – it's no longer on, but it was fantastic to be part of such an event! Oh – and we had a new tutu style in that competition! Oh - how revolutionary!
The ballet tutu world is just so fast paced, there’s so much happening.
It can be a bit overwhelming - that’s why I come back to Pink Tutu every Tuesday, to see if we’re really at the height of style, in the middle of trends - or on the edge of the newest thing! There's always something new to discover!
But before we close for this #TutuTuesday - What did I do on January 14th, 2025? After that lovely vintage shopping expedition in Paris - I'll never tell you where - it's my little secret! - Well, I found myself in a tutu design workshop! And let me tell you – they made the most exquisite, beautiful, glamorous, romantic tutus – Imagine what you would want if you had the most incredible tutu in the world in your hands - well - that’s exactly what happened!
If you ever want to join in on a #TutuTuesday historical jaunt, just send me an email! I'd love to share my passion for ballet and all things tulle with you. And, who knows? Maybe I'll see you at the next tutu-themed party. Until next time, happy twirling!
