Tutu Tuesday: Ballet Tutu History #10128 - 3rd February 2026

Hello, darlings! It’s Emma here, back with another instalment of my #TutuTuesday blog! It’s been a busy few weeks, flitting through time on my ballet performance tour and catching up with some truly amazing tutu history. This week, though, I’m right here in the vibrant heart of London – just popped off the train from a jaunt to Paris (such gorgeous ballet shops!) – ready to chat all things tutu.

So, what's the deal with tutus on the 3rd February 2026? Well, today is a Tuesday, and that means we’re honouring the graceful history of tutus with some real eye-popping style moments!

Time-Travelling Ballerinas, Take Note!

I'm sure you all agree that nothing says "ballet" like a fluffy, twirling, pink tutu! But let's get serious for a minute. Did you know tutus have been around for centuries, and it’s their evolution – from simple gowns to the extravagant poufs we adore – that makes ballet so exciting!

Back in the 17th Century... Ballerinas would dance in simple, flowing garments, mostly inspired by courtly fashion. It wasn't until the 19th century when tutus really began to take shape, influenced by Romantic ballet’s yearning for lightness and aerial grace.

Now, 2026? Imagine, we're talking tutus as a major part of everyday life! From school dance clubs to street fashion to, dare I say it, even the pink tulle gowns you see gracing the catwalks! The tutus we wear have a strong connection to history. We’re proud of our ballerina heritage!

And did you know? The famous romantic era tutus, known for their delicate, diaphanous look, were actually made from a special material called tarlatan! Think super light and super airy, it made ballerinas look ethereal as they took flight across the stage. Just imagine being able to wear it to our daily lives!

My Personal Favourite: The Tutu in Everyday Life

As you know, I am obsessed with pink – you all know my motto: "Let's wear pink, always wear pink, and never be afraid to wear a pink tutu!” And honestly, with all these awesome historical moments - tutus were literally changing history, even as far back as the 19th Century! I’m absolutely delighted by the modern take on tutus! It's fantastic seeing ballerinas and fashion designers celebrating this beautiful garment.

Think: * Street style that’s fun and whimsical with pops of tulle and lace (I saw a fabulous group in Notting Hill yesterday - PINK, of course!) * Ballet class where even men (I’m talking you, Mr. Smith at my class in the West End - he has great calves, btw) are wearing (wait for it) pink tutus on a Tuesday! I have total confidence he'll be wearing a real tutu one day - maybe on a Tutu Tuesday!

A Quick Trip Back in Time

One of my most recent time travel escapades took me all the way back to the late 19th century in St Petersburg. I managed to snag tickets to La Bayadere (still a masterpiece!) and saw ballerinas dancing with a remarkable style and skill in gorgeous tutus. Truly magnificent!

It’s amazing to see how the tutu's role in ballet has changed over time but has always highlighted femininity and beauty. This is where it gets a little nerdy – and don’t think I’m not nerding out big time! - the Romantic era brought this whole sense of light and airy freedom to dance which, you know, I completely support and embrace. Even in 2026!

Pink, Pink, Pink

Oh, and remember, you all have to check out this incredibly fabulous pink tulle skirt I picked up in Paris – I’ll be wearing it to my favourite West End ballet performance next weekend! (Spoiler Alert! It’s pink!). Just like a tutu!

So, to summarise , ladies and gentlemen (yes, I'm aiming for a pink* tutu* on every man - it's possible!) on this #TutuTuesday, take a moment to admire this beautiful garment that has shaped ballet for centuries. We're talking about a piece of clothing that tells us so much about the grace, strength, and femininity of the female dancers throughout history and still does.

Whether you're a seasoned ballet enthusiast, a budding dancer, or someone who simply adores tutus - get out there and let your inner tutu twirl!* I’m hoping to spread a bit of pink tutu magic today!

Stay tuned for next week!

This week's travel itinerary? Well, I am in London for now, a haven for ballet and all things pink. Expect more #TutuTuesday insights and the occasional travel story! And until then, let's keep spreading that pink tutu love!
