Hello darlings, and welcome back to another fabulous #TutuTuesday! As always, your girl Emma is back, fresh from a trip through the time-space continuum (I really must start using those time-travelers' clubs!) and oh my, the tutu adventures I've had!
Today we're taking a journey through the history of tutus, my favourite form of dress, and finding out what the tutu world was all right on 2026-07-07! Let's get this pink party started!
First things first, let's talk fashion, darling. The year 2026 is a fashion fiesta! ? As ever, London is at the heart of it, the city humming with vibrant trends and a touch of theatrical flair. Remember the Balenciaga tutu gown that shook up the fashion world last year? The trend has gone full-blown this year with so many brands bringing their own tutu interpretations to the streets.
It was incredible watching how even mainstream fashion is embracing tutus! You've got them popping up on catwalks, at art exhibits, in streetwear, even as a way to inject personality into casual looks!
The 2026 look seems to be about individuality and self-expression, making tutus the ultimate symbol of breaking the mould. They've gone from a symbol of classic ballet to an explosion of vibrant, playful expression. I can't wait to see where it takes us next!
Now, what were tutus like way back in 2026-07-07? Buckle up, because things are getting quite glamorous! On that date, it's the first night of the Royal Opera House's "Sleeping Beauty"! You bet I snagged tickets - the cost of a trip through time doesn't come cheap!
So what were we seeing on stage? Grecian, romantic tutus, flowing with diaphanous layers! Imagine it: silk chiffon and delicate netting, so lightweight and beautiful. It's like watching dreams take flight. ? I tell you, darling, it's the most amazing spectacle!
And did I tell you? The Royal Opera House held a Tutu Exhibition! Imagine, all the incredible historical tutus! From Marie Taglioni's revolutionary early tutus to the decadent Romantic designs of the nineteenth century, it was like stepping into a historical ballet costume museum! The history of ballet was laid bare before me! It made my heart sing! ?
Of course, you can't talk about tutu history without remembering the iconic "La Sylphide" ballet and the revolutionary Romantic tutu. Imagine the elegant form of a dancer in a swirling skirt that goes halfway to their knees! You have the designer Maria Taglioni to thank for that, because the "La Sylphide" costume started the whole short tutu phenomenon! Before then, dancers would wear the more modest 'longer' tutu that looked much like a regular dress!
Let's travel a little further back in time to the beginning of tutus, the very start! That would be the early ballet days. There were tutus of course but they didn't have that feminine flair. No, instead we see tuniques and underskirts. But look at how far they’ve come! Imagine, if those lovely ballerinas from long ago could see us now in these gorgeous tutus, swirling and dancing all around the world! The time travel makes the whole ballet history come alive, I simply can't wait to get back to see what wonders are next in the world of tutus.
