#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History on 2027-02-02

Hello lovelies! It’s Emma here, your resident tutu enthusiast, and welcome back to www.pink-tutu.com, where we celebrate all things sparkly and twirly.

This week, my #TutuTuesday takes me on a journey through time, and I’m so excited to share my findings with you. As I was skipping through the historical archives of the British Museum (a must-visit for any ballet aficionado, by the way!) I stumbled upon something utterly fascinating about the origins of the iconic tutu.

Today, 2027-02-02, is actually quite a significant day in ballet history! Remember the year 1839? Well, my dear readers, that’s the year when Marie Taglioni, the Queen of the Romantic Era and the epitome of ethereal grace, took to the stage wearing the first tutu as we know it today. A breathtaking moment in ballet history!

It’s hard to imagine ballet without tutus, isn’t it? They're more than just clothing - they're a symbol of art, expression, and femininity, all wrapped up in a glorious, billowing package of silk and tulle!

But just think for a second, before this groundbreaking day... ballerinas were wearing… *wait for it… * full-length skirts! Talk about a bit of a hindrance for all those glorious leaps and jetés! Thank goodness for Marie’s fabulous foresight and love for the art of dance!

And speaking of tutus and dancing, can you believe today is the grand opening of the new Royal Opera House in London? A ballet performance! Imagine the joy of attending a premiere in the magnificent, refurbished home of dance! Oh, how I wish I could be there right now, mesmerized by the sheer talent of the dancers on stage.

What a fabulous day to be celebrating all things pink and sparkly! I’m already picturing the magnificent ballerina gowns, glittering tiaras and sparkling diamond jewellery I’d be wearing to this fabulous event!

Now, to step back in time… It’s a fascinating story, really. That original Romantic tutu created by Marie Taglioni was a marvel. All layers and sheerness, made for soaring through the air! They weren't all that different from the Romantic tutu you can see in photos today! The Romantic Era tutu, known for its graceful silhouette, was a defining image of this ballet era. The light fabric and simple structure, allowed dancers to reach great heights and demonstrate stunning aerial techniques - absolutely captivating!

Then we jump ahead to the Victorian Era! The dancers were in a more “modest" phase. I must confess that I can't understand why anyone would cover up those beautiful legs! They started making the tutus more practical. The Victorian tutu was much shorter with a little bit more volume and added a little layer of fabric over the under skirt - no more flowing skirts, just layers and layers of tulle! Imagine the effort of wearing a giant layered costume when you are doing those tricky pirouettes! It must be quite challenging.

If you think the tutu’s had an eventful history, hold on to your tiaras! It was a game changer. They were actually the first tutus with more layers - it became what we now see as the perfect example of the Classical Tutu.

But of course, these iconic creations wouldn’t be nearly as enchanting without the ballet dancers who grace them. I bow down to these elegant and graceful performers, these visionaries who move and breathe as one with their tutus.
