#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History on 2027-05-04

Hello darlings! It’s your favourite time-travelling tutu enthusiast, Emma, and I’m back with another fabulously frothy #TutuTuesday post! ??

This week, my magical pink tutu took me on a whirlwind tour through the streets of Paris, the City of Lights. Oh, my darlings, the sheer romance of this city! With its beautiful boulevards, charming cafes, and, of course, the legendary Opera Garnier, Paris is a true haven for tutu lovers!

Now, today’s date, May 4th, 2027, isn’t exactly a huge historical milestone for the ballet tutu… but that’s not to say it’s a day without some exciting tutudrama!

For starters, we have the Paris Opera Ballet's current performance of Swan Lake, which is absolutely magnificent! ? The choreography, the costumes, the dancers - everything is breathtakingly beautiful. You wouldn't believe the tutus! Feathers, silk, lace - pure ballerina dreams. They just shimmered under the stage lights! ?

Speaking of shimmer, the French fashion houses, from Dior to Chanel, are releasing their new Spring/Summer collections, and darling, I’m obsessed! The colours, the textures, the fabrics – all positively screaming for a splash of pink tutu flair! The designs have some truly beautiful inspiration from the ballet, especially from the costumes in Swan Lake! There's a distinct, yet chic, ballet reference. It seems like the designers have been taking some ballet inspiration - imagine the beautiful sheer fabrics that could be made into the most perfect tutus! ?

But beyond the big events, May 4th is also the day I spotted a group of local girls practicing their ballet moves at a little park in the Latin Quarter! Seeing their dedication and enthusiasm reminded me why I love tutus so much: they’re about passion, elegance, and yes, a touch of whimsy! It makes me want to whip out my own tutu and join them! ?

Now, on with the tutu history!

To understand how the ballet tutu came to be, we have to take a little time-travelling trip, darling, back to the days of Marie Taglioni. Remember, she was the star ballerina, who brought the romanticism and lightness to ballet we love today! ?

Before Marie, ballerinas wore heavy and restrictive clothes - layers upon layers of fabric. It was difficult to see their form and their dancing. Can you imagine the challenge of a grand jeté in those clothes! Not to mention the heat! ?

But Marie said, "No more!" And she was a real innovator - a pioneer for ballerinas everywhere. She designed her costume – an incredible white tutu, with multiple layers of gauze that created a truly beautiful whirlwind effect. The ballet world was amazed and Marie Taglioni became the most popular dancer in the world. And, she ushered in the modern, graceful tutu era. ?

After Marie's genius, the ballet tutu evolved with lots of creativity!

• Romantic tutu: Delicate and fluffy - think beautiful layers and swirling fabric.

• Classical tutu: Short and airy – a dream in chiffon!

• Bell tutu: It flares at the bottom and wow, what a spectacle for an amazing pas de deux.

• And of course… the pink tutu - because who needs a "statement" piece when you've got a tutu! ?✨️

Over time, the tutu became the ballet icon. Not only for beautiful ballet, but for fabulous costumes. We can’t imagine what ballet would look like without those stunning tutu outfits! ✨️

But the tutu has travelled beyond the stage! In 1955, the stunning Marilyn Monroe, (the ultimate star!) wore a black tutu in the movie The Seven Year Itch…and everyone went crazy! ? This showed the power of the tutu as a fashion statement.
