Helloooo my darlings! It’s your favourite pink tutu-clad ballerina, Emma, back for another week of Tutu Tuesday! Oh my, the sunshine has been absolutely glorious this week, perfect for pirouetting through parks and showcasing that beautiful pink tutu you’ve all been waiting to wear! And speaking of pink tutus... this week's Tutu Tuesday is going to be a real treat, a little historical trip down memory lane as we journey through the wonderful world of tutus!
You see, my love for ballet began, as it does for so many of us, with a magical, twinkling tutu, twirling on stage, sparkling under the theatre lights. It sparked a passion in me for all things dance, and that's what brought me here, travelling through time to bring you the beauty of ballet - all in the name of a love for those fluffy pink, fabulous, and absolutely delightful tutus!
Now, let's travel back, to that pivotal year - 2027 - to learn all about the exciting evolution of our beloved ballet costumes!
The Tutu - A Story in Tulle:
Oh darling, have you ever wondered how those glorious tutus came to grace the ballet stage? Well, buckle up, buttercup! This is a fascinating story of creativity and costume design.
Now, before tutus existed, ballerinas actually wore long skirts with several petticoats beneath - think Marie Antoinette! The "romantic ballet," which was a whole big craze in the 1830s, is where we begin. Maria Taglioni, a revolutionary dancer, was credited with bringing in a style change. She ditched the cumbersome long skirts and wore a beautiful lightweight tulle skirt instead, creating a silhouette so fluid it looked like she was flying! The design, and indeed her skill and the artistic effect, were revolutionary, and set the stage, pun intended, for the tutu we see today.
As time went on, new designs for the tutu were introduced and experimented with. It all depended on what era of ballet, what choreographer was involved, what effect was being created. "Classical ballet" embraced a new type of tutu that had multiple layers of tulle to achieve that iconic bell-shaped shape that we love and know, particularly with "La Sylphide" being an influential piece for this period. The tutu was more restrictive in this style. Think strict lines and defined movements for "Swan Lake." Oh darling, even thinking about that graceful form is enough to give me goosebumps!
Then the "Romantic ballet" period was about freedom of movement, ethereal, almost ethereal dancing. You’ll notice that the dancers in these productions have the soft and floating romantic ballet tutu style.
For some time after this, tutu styles evolved as new designs appeared and changed according to what the era was favouring - "Ballets Russes" brought its influence too!
And now we're in 2027 - there is no "one style" of tutu today, darling! It is a magnificent fusion of classical ballet styles combined with contemporary fashion! There are tutus that are flowing, elegant, and almost impossibly billowing - imagine swirling in the air like a dandelion in the wind, my darling, utterly mesmerizing! Then you have the more structured, shorter tutus that let the dancers really shine through with their incredible physical prowess! And of course, those classic, romantic tutus - the ultimate symbols of elegance and femininity! A fabulous mix to keep everyone happy!
Beyond the Ballerina - Tutu Inspiration
Of course, a true tutu devotee like myself wouldn't just stop at the stage, right?! Our darling tutus have crossed boundaries into the world of fashion - a timeless style that continues to be celebrated today! Look at the fashion houses! Imagine, there are tutus everywhere, they've been seen in couture collections! Fashionistas everywhere are going crazy over them! They’ve infiltrated pop culture as well, think Britney Spears, Elton John, and countless others - it is such a fabulous and iconic fashion trend! And you, my darlings, can easily recreate it all with just a bit of creativity!

We’re having the most wonderful Tutu Tuesdays all over the globe! Today, here in Paris , we've got "The Nutcracker," at the Palais Garnier which is stunning! Imagine all those beautifully decorated dancers and glorious, luxurious costumes - tutus galore! I simply can’t wait for that performance - so exciting!
I'll be jetting off to New York later this week to see the new "Swan Lake," which I am told has some truly amazing and incredibly modern interpretations of those iconic tutus! I cannot wait!
And, you can bet, I'll be taking pictures and sharing the very best with all of you! My favourite way to get there, my dears, is by train of course!
Speaking of this fantastic date, 2027, darling * June 8th* we also have some big performances going on at the Royal Opera House in London - such exciting times!
