Hello darlings, and welcome to another #TutuTuesday adventure here on www.pink-tutu.com! This week, I'm back from a whirlwind trip to Paris (and yes, I did manage to squeeze in a visit to the Galeries Lafayette to hunt down the perfect vintage pink tutu – just divine, darlings!), and I'm feeling all kinds of inspired to talk about the history of the ballet tutu.
Now, you may think the ballet tutu is all about frills and fancy frills, but this beautiful garment has a fascinating history, filled with as much drama and intrigue as the greatest ballet itself!
Let's whisk back to the early 1800s. It’s the Romantic Era – gorgeous – and in a dramatic moment of revolutionary thinking, Marie Taglioni dared to defy the conventional dancing skirts of the time. Imagine, wearing a dress when your feet are the stars of the show! She kicked those hems up to reveal the amazing ankles that were all the rage back then.
Cue gasps of amazement – and also gasps from the critics, oh my. The tutus were considered shockingly short and unconventional. But the daring Taglioni became the darling of the ballet world, a true innovator.
Now, these original tutus were quite practical. Made of multiple layers of tulle, they were soft and floaty, giving maximum movement to these ballerinas who literally defied gravity on stage.
Think about it, darlings. When you wear a pink tutu you feel a little like you’re on cloud nine! This isn't just a dress, it’s an expression of movement, of grace, of artistry – and that's exactly what Taglioni captured in those first few groundbreaking tutus!
However, as time went by, and technology progressed (yes, darlings, it happened even in the ballet world), tutus began to change. Imagine my excitement when, during a visit to the National Ballet School in London a few weeks ago, I saw a beautiful collection of these transformative tutus. It was like stepping through a time portal into the past.
In the middle of the 1800s, those multilayered tutus were swapped for a more streamlined version – think ‘Romantic’ ballet. A smaller hoop called a ‘cage’ would hold up those delicate tulle layers. Think of this as modern dance but vintage.
Imagine – floating in your pink tutu, gracefully defying the laws of gravity, making every move feel as light as a feather – blissful.
Over the course of the 20th century, tutus started reflecting the changing dance styles – from classical to contemporary. Imagine how those changes impacted the tutu itself. You wouldn't find a traditional tutu at a ballet street performance, for example. Just picture those street ballet dancers, they might have their own tutu variations – maybe cropped, or perhaps more relaxed, with perhaps a little fringe! It's fascinating how ballet keeps evolving! And it's fascinating how our fashion trends also reflect what we're seeing on the ballet stage, don't you think?
Now, speaking of evolution, today, the 29th of June, we can see some absolutely beautiful examples of how tutus continue to adapt on stage in some fantastic contemporary dance pieces!
As for me, I’ll be watching the ballet street performance of “Giselle” in a beautiful, vintage pink tutu. Oh, and my favourite new pink silk blouse and shoes. My trusty travel bag is filled with these items! I can't wait! The dance style might be changing but the spirit of movement – flowing, expressive, graceful – will remain the same, making this tutu eternally relevant and fashionable, from stage to street.
After all, what could be better than feeling like a ballerina, a goddess in your own pink tutu? Nothing, my dears, nothing.
