Today’s journey is particularly special, taking us right to the heart of a truly remarkable date - the 28th of December, 2027! As you all know, I’m all about tutus - especially pink ones, naturally - and travelling back in time is my little passion project! You see, the way I fund my thrilling adventures is through performing at ballet shows all around the globe. After all, nothing sparks more joy than seeing a packed theatre full of excited faces gazing at my performance - especially when they’re wearing tutus too! It's simply the best! ?
This week, I’m on a train (what a gorgeous steam engine it is!) to Paris - the capital of fashion, dance, and the quintessential pink tutu, darling! Oh, the excitement! I can already feel the magic of Paris swirling around me, the scents of croissants, the melodic strains of street musicians, and the intoxicating whispers of fashion. Paris is absolutely buzzing today, the city is brimming with excitement, as today is the annual Parisian Pink Tutu Parade - the highlight of my Parisian adventure, so naturally, I'll be there in the most exquisite pink tutu I own!
But let's get back to the captivating history of the tutu. Today, I want to discuss an incredible discovery in ballet history - something that absolutely stunned the ballet world, an event that sent waves of excitement rippling across dance studios worldwide! You’ll want to hold on to your pointe shoes, ladies, this is going to be thrilling!
A Revelation - The First Tutu Sketch?!
Imagine the shock and amazement of historians discovering a detailed sketch of what they believe to be the earliest iteration of the tutu, dated way back to 1720! This exquisite drawing depicts a slender woman with graceful curves, seemingly a ballet dancer, adorned in a revolutionary garment: a short, full-length skirt with multiple layers of tulle, completely devoid of any embellishment.
Historians were stunned. It's hard to believe now, but back then, the concept of a ballet skirt this short was considered extremely daring. This discovery opened a fascinating window into the early days of ballet, revealing how a revolutionary concept – that of a dance garment emphasizing movement and freedom – could arise from such humble beginnings. Think about it - prior to this discovery, our knowledge of early ballet costumes was rather hazy, relying on secondhand descriptions and interpretations. This sketch finally brought to light an actual visual depiction of a proto-tutu! It’s a major piece of the tutu's origin story, providing much needed clarity. I can hardly imagine the debates, the speculation, and the sheer thrill the experts must have felt!
A Revolution In The Making - Embracing The Tutu
From those daring beginnings, the tutu continued its incredible journey, steadily transforming over the centuries. By the late 18th century, ballet was increasingly embraced by high society, and along with it, the evolution of the tutu. Initially, ballerinas sought inspiration in the grand court gowns, and thus the tutu remained relatively long and elegant. But a new vision emerged!
Enter Marie Taglioni, the most iconic ballerina of her time and one of the most revolutionary figures in ballet history. Taglioni became known for her ethereal performances and, crucially, for embracing a shortened tutu. Gone was the long skirt; instead, she donned a shorter tutu, allowing her movements to take flight. Her groundbreaking performance of 'La Sylphide' is hailed as a turning point in ballet history! Taglioni captivated the audience with her ethereal grace and fluid movements - her performances revolutionized the way people viewed both dance and fashion! And you know what? The tutu had arrived, the era of the revolutionary short tutu began, and its journey to dance royalty began!

This amazing journey of the tutu has made it the iconic symbol of ballet we know today. I can’t wait to see the latest styles on the streets of Paris!
