Hello darlings! It's your favourite tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, back with another fabulously fabulous Tutu Tuesday post. Today we're diving headfirst into the wonderful history of the ballet tutu – and oh, let me tell you, there’s so much to love!
I’ve been whisking myself around the globe, dancing and shopping my way through history. Just the other day I was waltzing in Vienna in the 1800s and let me tell you, tutus were seriously making their mark. I was all aflutter, swirling my own tulle cloud around me, trying not to bump into Marie Antoinette. What a regal time it was, even if I did nearly bump into that guillotine... Anyway, back to the tutus!
From Courtly Bustles to Ballet Bliss:
Before we get all twirly, let’s chat a bit about those historical hoops and petticoats! You see, the tutu didn't magically pop up out of nowhere. Back in the 1700s, our ladies of the court were adorned with gigantic, billowing panniers. It was huge - seriously, those women could have opened their own boutiques inside their gowns! Then, things started getting slimmer with the invention of the crinoline - think giant, round petticoats, which were more * manageable* if you’ll pardon the expression. These petticoats gave the dancers some wonderful movement – but were definitely not ready for a grand jeté.
Then along came Marie Taglioni, a renowned ballerina, and the stage lights started flashing! This talented beauty thought enough with all those layers! She needed something that moved, that flowed, and that showed off those perfect ballet moves. She revolutionised the art of dance with the tutu.
Now, I have to be honest, Marie's first tutus were not the floaty, fairytale numbers we see today. Think more knee-length, soft layers of netting – a truly graceful starting point, but with plenty of room for evolution.
The Romantic Tutu:
Marie Taglioni became the poster-girl for the tutu and let's be real – it was truly iconic. She wore it in a ballet called “La Sylphide," a fairy tale of love and flight. And everyone loved it! Suddenly, all the grandes dames wanted to see a tutu. They were fascinated with the beauty and the freedom, a new type of femininity was born! It truly took the dance world by storm, inspiring an era of airy, elegant ballet movements.
But tutus don't just look divine. It was the costume for ballerinas. It allowed for greater freedom of movement. Those ballerinas could truly leap, twist, and soar across the stage.
Whimsical Layers:
As time flew by, tutus took on multiple layers. Imagine layers and layers of sheer fabric cascading down the leg, a beautiful waterfall of tulle. These "Romantic tutus" - as they were called - were truly breathtaking, swirling like clouds with every grand jeté.
Then, along came the “Classical Tutu.” This is what we think of today: a shorter, perfectly sculpted creation. Picture layers upon layers of tulle gathered to create a shape – it's an explosion of colour and grace.
Pink Perfection, of course!
Who better to demonstrate the classical tutu than the ever so chic Carlotta Grisi, my absolute favourite! She danced in all shades of the colour palette, but nothing compared to the glorious pink tutus she adorned herself with – pink is so glamorous, don’t you think? A beautiful blush pink, or perhaps a sparkling fuschia - Carlotta knew how to turn heads! And you know I was there for it – watching those glorious swirling tutus! It was simply sensational.
Let's Travel Forward to… Today!
Today's tutus are a feast for the eyes. They’re a culmination of history, a gorgeous blending of elegance and style. I've been lucky enough to watch ballet performances around the world, and let me tell you - the creativity never stops! I’ve even seen tutus with glitter, sequins and *sparkly embroidery! *
There are so many types of tutus, too: long tutus, short tutus, puffy tutus, tutu-skirts, you name it, they have it. It's amazing to see how the tutu has evolved and stayed relevant! It’s a powerful symbol of creativity, femininity, and most of all, dance.
A Few Favourite Finds (2028!)
I’m just a little excited to share what’s been trending this past year in the tutu world - especially this very date, April 18th! The world of ballet and its beautiful tutus is abuzz with vibrant, joyous colours. You’ve probably guessed by now, but it’s all about the pink in 2028. Here's a look at what’s in this spring!
Royal Rose: The reigning queen of the dance floor. From ballet classics like "Sleeping Beauty" to the latest Broadway hits, this colour is a guaranteed stunner. Imagine a vibrant rose, but even more vibrant – like sunshine after a rain shower! Just amazing.
- Bubblegum Delight: This sweet pastel shade is all about carefree, charming fun! Perfect for both elegant and whimsical dances, it adds a light and playful touch.
- Hot Pink Punch: Think a fiery energy - that’s Hot Pink! It is everything. This powerful pink explodes with confidence and a bit of fierce edge – making a statement and taking your dance to the next level.
- Tutu Trends: For every occasion! Short tutu skirts, which I am just loving, look so sophisticated and easy to wear, paired with a stylish shirt. Then there are the “pastel tulle tutu tops,” giving a fresh twist on the "balletcore" look! And, we can’t forget the ballet pumps which are always a favourite, whether they’re sleek and stylish, or have some cute satin ribbons and glitter – you can't go wrong with a ballet pump.
