Today's post is going to be a little bit different. As a ballerina who also happens to be a time traveller (shhh, don't tell anyone!), I often find myself whisked away to different eras and locations. But you know what I find endlessly fascinating? How the ballet tutu has evolved throughout history. I mean, we’re talking serious fashion statement here, girls!
Today's date is May 2nd, 2028, and you know what that means? It's tutu-rific!* The world is still absolutely gaga for all things tutu, and London, the theatre capital of the world, is absolutely buzzing!
This year's ballet season is phenomenal! The Royal Opera House is celebrating the bicentenary of one of the most iconic ballerinas of all time: Marie Taglioni, the “Queen of the Dance.” Oh, my gosh, her costumes were to die for! The Romantic era of ballet was all about wispy tutus, and Taglioni’s tulle-light garments really took centre stage. We are talking the epitome of effortless elegance. ?
It's simply impossible to discuss ballet fashion without a proper nod to the original tutu's inventor. We have the lovely Marie-Antoine Carle for this one. A genius with tulle and fabric, he brought us the tutu-lution! Now, I wouldn't call him a “He” in the sense we think of it these days. He was a woman, but back then it was more common to identify by "masculine" roles - even when working with feminine items! Anyway, she was revolutionary in the theatre world, and those big pouffy tutus of her designs set the stage for some of the most dazzling ballet productions!
My, what a treat it is to time-travel! Being a time-travelling blogger means that I get to attend the world's most exquisite ballet performances and shop in all the most beautiful vintage stores. London is heaven when it comes to both of these! It’s basically one massive fashion showroom! The colours, the patterns, the silhouettes – just divine! The Victoria and Albert Museum is hosting a spectacular exhibition on the history of ballet costume. Talk about a visual feast! My travel expenses? I finance it all by dancing! I perform a bit of street theatre when I am on the move. Who knows, I might bump into you at Covent Garden!
You can be sure, my fellow tutu-enthusiasts, that I will be at the opening night of the new production of “Giselle,” which opens in a few days' time at Covent Garden. I am so excited! It’s my favourite! This time around, the ballerina leading the piece, the legendary Émilie Dufour, has a brand-new bespoke tutu created just for her. The delicate lace, the blush pink satin lining, oh my! I'm convinced that I might have to break out my own personal wardrobe for the occasion – pink, of course!

Talking about the Tutu, well, darling, there's just nothing else like it! I’ve been a tutu fanatic since I was a little girl. You could say I’m slightly obsessed, haha! They make me feel magical! I even wear a pink tutu most days. When I go for ballet class, for theatre outings or simply to the park, it never fails to attract some delighted glances! I have them in every colour imaginable, and all kinds of styles! Romantic tutus, short tutus, grand tutus with panniers, cabrea tutus and the double tutu which is a real delight. But a pink tutu for me is essential. It's not just a fashion choice, darling! It's an attitude. It's about celebrating your own grace and style. And yes, it’s about celebrating YOU!
Since I am such a fan of all things tutu, I’m thinking I’ll run a little competition over the next few weeks to celebrate the history of this iconic ballet garment. Perhaps we can even pick a "tutu" icon? Or we could have a design contest to make your own signature tutu? Do let me know what you think!
