Today, June 20th, 2028, we're jetting off on a fabulous adventure into the fascinating world of the ballet tutu! But first, let's have a chinwag about where we're landing this week...
Now, if you know your ballet history, you'll know that while tutu styles have evolved through the centuries, the centre of the ballet universe is firmly anchored in… you guessed it, Paris! This city of lights, fashion, and oh-so-chic artistry has always held a special place in the ballet world, and as such, we're waltzing our way to the City of Love this Tuesday! ??
Right, let's rewind the clock. In the bustling heart of Paris, I'm stepping into the world of the Romantic era. Picture this: fluffy tulle tutus, delicate bodices, and ballerinas pirouetting on pointe, practically flying across the stage. Oh, it's a sight to behold! But here’s the thing - the evolution of the ballet tutu itself was quite the adventure, and it started long before those dreamy Romantic era tutus.
So, back in the day, there wasn't really a 'tutu'. Let’s go right back to the 16th century. Fancy men and women in long, heavy gowns were dancing in ballrooms. Imagine trying to do a pirouette in all that fabric! Honestly, it must have been more of a tumble than a turn. ?♀️
Thankfully, times changed! We enter the 18th century and the French ballet begins to embrace a simpler style of clothing – a movement known as "le pas de deux". Shorter, lighter skirts were starting to make an appearance and this was a turning point in how dancers looked on stage. Think frilly and pretty, still a world away from our modern tutus.
The year is now 1832. And oh, the change! Marie Taglioni bursts onto the stage in the first Romantic tutu. The audience gasped! It was practically revealing, shocking even. With that new, lightweight and form-fitting style, ballerinas could finally showcase their athleticism, dancing with a newfound lightness and grace. It was revolutionary!
Let’s be honest though, there was an element of scandal back in the day! The Romantic tutu, often referred to as a "tutu-en-cul-de-poule", was so short that the female ballet dancers basically had nothing between them and the stage but a couple of layers of tulle. Think sparkly Victorian underwear… quite daring for their time!
Thankfully for us ballet-lovers, tutu trends progressed! From the late 1800s onwards, we see the tutus start to lengthen, becoming more dramatic, with full layers of tulle, cascading down the legs, which became iconic to the ballet stage. The ballerina’s tutu was evolving into what we know and love today. ?
It's incredible to see how ballet, from its humble beginnings, has embraced innovation, evolution, and oh so much artistry, just like the tutus themselves! Each era brought its own style, pushing the boundaries of what was considered beautiful, acceptable, and even… revolutionary!

- In Paris itself, we’re having a special gala event at the Opéra Garnier. The theme is all about tutus! We have guest performances, discussions, and the iconic Swan Lake itself! This evening will be brimming with classic Parisian elegance and, of course, a few pink tutus. I'm certainly not missing that.
- The Bolshoi in Moscow has just premiered their brand new production of Romeo and Juliet. Rumour has it they have amazing costumes – think flowing tulle and lots of colour – all beautifully crafted and perfectly dramatic. I am excited to see those beautiful new tutus, darling.
