Hello my lovely pink-tutu-loving friends! ?? Welcome to another #TutuTuesday here on www.pink-tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things tutu-tastic! It's Emma here, and I'm positively bouncing with excitement to share today's fabulous journey through ballet history. We're stepping back in time to 16th January 1832, a truly momentous year in tutu history, for this was the date when the first recognised "tutu" took its first pirouette! Yes, you read that right, dear readers. No more cumbersome skirts!
Imagine, if you will, a world where ballerinas danced in billowing, restrictive skirts, their movement restricted, their elegance stifled! Well, thankfully, that was all about to change! It was a time of radical change, an age of new ideas, where fashion, and art were being redefined, much like our love affair with the tutu is today!
The year is 1832 and the Parisian ballet stage was abuzz with anticipation. Marie Taglioni, a true legend of the ballet world, was preparing for a premiere unlike anything seen before. This was no ordinary performance - this was the debut of the revolutionary "tutu," designed by the fashion icon of the time, Charles-Frederick Worth! Imagine, this tutu wasn’t even called a tutu, it was simply seen as a fashionable way for women to showcase their legs! It's like today's crop top, isn't it? A radical step that's become the standard!
This tutu wasn't your standard, long, layered skirt. Oh no, it was short, showcasing the dancers’ legs in all their glory. The legs, once hidden, became a source of elegance and power. Imagine the sensation! Legs on show, and it all started with this tutu! The world gasped! There was Marie Taglioni, a goddess in the most captivating, elegant and liberating costume! Imagine - the whole world would soon follow. The whole world would dance in tutus, forevermore!
It was revolutionary! The design allowed the dancers, for the first time ever, the freedom of movement that their talents demanded. I’m sure Marie Taglioni must have pirouetted around the stage, feeling as light as air! What a liberating experience! Imagine the thrill of it all! This revolutionary piece of clothing opened up the possibility of grace, power and agility on stage and changed the face of dance forever. I dare say we owe a debt of gratitude to Marie and her design for the beautiful evolution of the ballet costume, for where would the pointe shoes be without the free leg movements they allowed!
Now, back to today and 16th January 2029, a date I’m writing in my travel diary and putting on my Google Calendar for sure. Where shall I visit today, for inspiration? Maybe I’ll pop over to the Paris Opera, you never know what you might discover in those beautiful old buildings - maybe I can get an early preview of some costumes! I always love an elegant dress. A beautiful dress, in a fabulous shop, like this, and my handbag to match! Or I’ll maybe pick up a beautiful tutu for a little souvenir from Paris! My friends often laugh, thinking I am a little tutu obsessed. I say it's never enough, and besides - it's fashion, right? The fashion industry has taken a leap with ballet, and tutus and the pink tutu have become ever so chic.
My tutu-mania was ignited by a school visit to the Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London. You’ll know the theatre, just around the corner from the iconic street theatre at Shakespeare’s Globe. A ballet was on, Swan Lake of course - there’s something captivating about this timeless story that pulls you into the narrative of the White Swan and her rival. I loved every single part of it! It all started with the tutus. They were all so elegant! All the grace! All the colours! Every performance, whether at the Opera House in my native Derby or the grand Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, is just fabulous! I love the energy and excitement I feel when I'm immersed in the magical storytelling! There’s always a thrill when a performance ends. And who knows what we will get tomorrow, on the world's ballet stage. My mind is already spinning. I think I have my next post all planned!
Anyway, you won’t catch me in boring leggings or just any old tracksuit for ballet class! Nothing can compete with the twirling bliss of my beloved tutu. The little, short tutu gives us the opportunity to show off those beautiful calves in a fantastic fashion, and the full skirt tutus bring back the old school grandeur that adds such magic! My favourite tutu right now is my vintage pale pink tutu, the colour of the ballet shoe itself! You will be amazed by how many wonderful tutus are out there in our ballet world! It's such a wonderful opportunity to experiment, find new styles and experiment with your own style - it's just pure tutu fun.
Just remember, no matter what style of tutu you choose to wear, let your own uniqueness and spirit shine through. After all, this is all about personal expression and finding your own version of ballerina chic, whether on the stage or strutting down your street!
