Hello lovelies! It’s Emma here, back with another #TutuTuesday blast from the past! Grab a cuppa and your favourite pink fluffy slippers, and get comfy. Today, we're travelling back in time, like the ballerina version of a Doctor Who adventure, all in the name of the tutu!
Oh my goodness, it’s hard to imagine a world without the iconic tutu! Imagine, darlings, the disappointment if your favourite ballerina wasn’t gliding across the stage in one of those gorgeous, flowing skirts! But I’m going to tell you a secret... The tutu, darling, hasn't always been as it is today! And as it turns out, there's a little bit of serendipity involved in its creation. Let's have a little giggle as we take a whirlwind journey back to 2029, shall we?
A Trip Through Time! ?
On this magical date, 20th March 2029, it’s such a thrill to be performing for an amazing charity gala here in beautiful London. My performance is on the schedule, with an excerpt from Don Quixote, and I get to wear the most heavenly tutu, with shimmering sequins. Later today, after the show, I have tickets for an extraordinary show - Cinderella. I've heard there's an incredible dance scene with some beautiful, modern tutus – can't wait to see them in person! And of course, later this evening, there's a shopping expedition to my favourite boutiques in Knightsbridge for more exquisite tutu fabric. It’s always a fabulous treat.
A Twist of Fate: The Evolution of the Tutu!
You know, the tutu's evolution is quite remarkable. Let’s hop back in our time-travelling pink sparkly sneakers and go back to the early 19th century!
Marie Taglioni was a real trailblazer for ballerinas - just imagine a world before pointe shoes! This legendary dancer needed a skirt that allowed for her spectacular jumps and breathtaking leaps, and wouldn’t hinder her movement in any way. A new form of ballet was blooming, requiring movement that previous skirts wouldn’t allow for, so a short, soft, tutu - designed for agility, light and airy - was introduced! In these early days, a ballerina might be wearing four to six layers of tulle or net stitched together to make that magical form! Talk about a transformation!
This, darlings, is the story of how the ‘romantic tutu’ was born. Think of it - a complete re-imagination of how ballerinas move and how audiences were meant to see them. It’s like the whole history of ballet was waiting to burst into something new and different!
Tutus and Fashion: A Match Made in Heaven
Now, let’s flash forward a bit!
By the end of the 19th century, fashion embraced this romantic new ballet movement. In 1880s Europe, the tutu inspired all sorts of lovely and glamorous clothing! This, darlings, is the tutu’s contribution to changing how ladies dress and are seen - its influence is everywhere! You could see those romantic tulle skirts in high society events, at tea parties and even in operas. Talk about inspiring a love affair with the tutu, even outside the dance world!
The Tutu, My Way
As much as I love ballet history, it's the tutus of the 21st century I’m most passionate about! I must tell you, it is such an exciting time to be a ballet fan! With ‘ballet street’, you can see beautiful choreographies all around you, with street dancers performing in modern variations on the traditional tutu - just a stunning spectacle with fantastic clothes. This era, for me, is about experimenting with tutus, making new combinations, putting on a modern twist and adding more colour, glitter and sparkles to what’s already a showstopping classic!
The best part, though, is seeing everyone dancing, everywhere - from the traditional theatre setting, to street performers, to beautiful tutus that you might find on the streets. There are no limits - tutus are about being you, dancing your heart out, and sharing a passion with other people, wherever you are!
