Firstly, can we just pause for a moment to admire the sheer elegance of today's date, 23rd October, 2029? Doesn't it just sing with a touch of whimsical charm? It's a Tuesday, of course, because Tuesdays are always for tutus, and the number 23? Oh, that's pure magic, isn't it? You simply cannot go wrong with a number like that. It's just perfect! And all of us tutu lovers out there will certainly be celebrating this perfect day.
This week's topic: A Dance through the Ages
Did you know that the iconic tutu wasn't always the fluffy, fabulous masterpiece we see today? Just imagine, before the days of poofy tutus, ballerinas were swirling and pirouetting around in what was, let's be honest, some rather restrictive and heavy clothing! Imagine! Thankfully, time has a wonderful way of revealing its secrets and pushing boundaries. As time went on, the need for greater movement, more elegance, and most importantly, freedom, led to the gradual evolution of the tutu.
Back to the Victorian Era - A Tutu Revolution
The 19th century, darlings, was the "Golden Age of Ballet", and it was during this magical time that the tutu, as we know it today, really came into its own. Ballet dancers like the divine Carlotta Grisi, who became a sensation as Giselle in 1841, brought us those stunning, flowing tutus that we love today. It's fair to say that she and her fellow dancers revolutionised the world of ballet. Their flowing tulle tutus, that swirled and whispered in a breathtaking ballet, truly captivated the audiences of the time. They transformed ballet from a regal and stately dance to a captivating, whimsical expression of grace and freedom. And believe me, the impact that Carlotta Grisi, and dancers like her had has had a profound impact that is still felt today.
20th Century Tutu Twirls - From The Stage To The Street
Moving forward to the 20th century, our beloved tutu began to pop up all over the place! Ballet tutus moved beyond the theatre stage. And, believe me, the transformation was quite magical! In the 1920s, those stunning creations, full of delicate frills and delicate tulle, began gracing fashion houses and taking their place on the dance floors across the globe. The "Garconne" look of the 1920s embraced the short, sleek skirt and the free flowing look that we know and love and made the tutu incredibly popular on the high street. And as the decades rolled on, the tutu just continued to flourish in fashion, it inspired iconic fashion designers like Christian Dior and Coco Chanel! It’s amazing, it really proves that this piece of ballet clothing could really be anything it wants to be! It can be elegant and whimsical, it can be sporty, sassy and chic and it's no surprise it can even be worn out and about on a busy London street! The tutu has so many facets to its personality that it's not a surprise it has a worldwide audience!
From Ballerina to Bohemian: The Tutu's Rise to Rock n' Roll Stardom
The 1960s and 1970s witnessed a phenomenal rise of the tutu, this time outside the realm of the grand ballroom! Ballet dancers began to take their moves off the stage to share their passion with everyone. Street performers began to create and use their creativity, their passion and dance for their own pleasure - for freedom, not for applause and this creativity took off. They incorporated elements from ballet, including tutus! And you've got to remember, in the 60s and 70s everyone had a passion for all things glamorous! In those days we all wanted a little glamour, even in the smallest, unexpected things! It was the golden age for creativity! And, by that I mean, there was no other time where you'd see the perfect combination of ballet, pop culture and fashion. From the classic ‘A Hard Day's Night' to the the 'Saturday Night Fever' of disco - everyone just loved a good tutu!
The Modern Tutu - Twirling into The Future
And here we are in 2029 - our glorious time! It's amazing to think how the tutu has transformed, evolved and still maintained its fabulous flair. You see all kinds of amazing new versions - ones with intricate lacework, metallic twinkles and breathtaking designs, just to name a few. We have a variety to suit every style - even tutus for men! The amazing thing about this fabulous garment is that there really isn’t a style it cannot pull off. From fashion-forward designs for high-end catwalk shows to versatile designs you can wear every day on the high street.
Ballet - It's So much More than a Dance.
You know me. It goes without saying I love ballet! Not just for its elegance and grace, but also because it is a wonderful expression of art, storytelling and passion. Every performance is a little piece of theatre that you can lose yourself in. There are so many incredible elements to appreciate. The stunning stage designs, the stunning costumes - oh! the tutus are breathtaking. You can feel a great deal of passion and inspiration pouring from every movement, every expression - it really does feel magical. And when a dancer completes that final pirouette? The silence of the audience and the applause - the entire atmosphere - it’s simply beautiful. It’s the reason why I love going to a show or to a class every chance I get.

For all the amazing tutus lovers in the Derbyshire area! Our annual "Tutu for a Day" celebration in Derbyshire is around the corner, it's always held on the second Saturday in November. It's so wonderful to see how this lovely tradition has captured the hearts of people, with so many participating! There are so many fun events, from workshops for aspiring ballerinas to charity events supporting dance groups and local theatres! It's truly the perfect occasion to unleash your inner ballerina, strut your stuff in your finest pink tutus, and celebrate the joy of dance!
