Hello darlings! It's your favourite tutu-tastic traveller, Emma, back with another exciting post for #TutuTuesday. This week, I'm whisking you back in time to explore the captivating history of the iconic ballet tutu, because, let's face it, life's too short to wear boring clothes!
As a seasoned time-traveler (I've got my travelling wardrobe down to a fine art, trust me!), my journeys often involve a train ticket and a thirst for the finer things. This week, I hopped on a steam-powered beauty right to the heart of Parisian fashion in the late 19th century. (Can you imagine, darlings? Imagine no TikTok! No influencers! Gasp!). It’s where the ballet tutu as we know it really took off – a glorious swirl of tulle, satin and elegance.
Before we dive into the past, a quick mention for this lovely 1st of January – a perfect day to begin the year on a high note. You’ve got a dazzling ballet to look forward to in New York, at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater - “Revelations.” I’m aiming to book a last-minute flight – I'm particularly keen on Alvin Ailey's expressive choreography. It will certainly be an exquisite blend of energy and beauty, a perfect way to ring in the new year, if I do say so myself.
But back to the grand tale of the tutu! Imagine, darling, a world where dancers were adorned in floor-length skirts, layers of petticoats, and even bloomers, hindering their movement. (Goodness me, the horror!) Then, the brilliant Marie Taglioni – the "Queen of Romantic Ballet" (a divine nickname, don't you think?)- swished onto the stage, dressed in the most fabulous, revolutionary attire.
This legendary ballerina and fashion icon shortened the traditional dance skirt to create the “tutu”, which exposed the ankles and freed the legs, giving the illusion of ethereal lightness. You can see it still in ballet today – we have Taglioni to thank for this graceful movement!
I absolutely adore the Romanticism period of ballet – its emphasis on storytelling and the ethereal movements are just so elegant. The delicate white tulle skirts, floating around these heavenly ballerinas – it’s sheer magic. Think La Sylphide – just dreamy! ( I have to visit Copenhagen to see the Royal Danish Ballet perform that piece – perhaps I'll grab a pink tutu and perform a spontaneous dance at the ballet theater… wouldn’t that be grand? Just a little something to add some joy, you know.)
Now, we have to give credit to Carlotta Grisi, a beautiful, innovative ballerina who dared to wear a daring shorter version, more like a diaphanous skirt. She was an absolute sensation! The tutu just kept evolving through the decades, becoming increasingly refined.
The Classical period brought more elaborate styles, with shorter, fuller tulle tutus featuring rows and rows of intricate pleating – an elegant spectacle, if I do say so myself. I'm certain they wouldn’t mind me wearing one of these extravagant pieces to the theatre, perhaps with a dash of pink sparkle and a glamorous pink feather boa to complete the look. (Just imagine, darling! Picture a Pink cloud gliding down the theatre steps).
But the tutu is more than just a fashion statement. It tells a story, an art form in itself! A ballerina's skirt reflects the spirit and the narrative of a specific era, almost like an echo from the past, a beautiful conversation across time.
Each fold, each swirl, speaks a language of graceful movement, a symbol of ballet's history, just like my dear Pink Tutu – she holds within her all the secrets of the graceful tutu throughout time – her sparkling, vibrant essence weaving together centuries of feminine power and beauty.
In modern times, the tutu remains an indispensable piece, yet the styles have shifted towards more dynamic silhouettes, reflecting the ever-evolving world of dance. It’s fantastic! It shows just how versatile a garment it is, able to reflect the changing spirit of the art without losing its elegant appeal. (Think bold contemporary dance, dramatic swirls and movement. My Pink Tutu knows a thing or two about taking centre stage, and oh, how I love a little flair! )
As always, darling, I love seeing my favourite ballerinas strutting their stuff in their wonderful tut u s, every little pink tulle cloud so delightful. They show the power of a graceful outfit and the way it can reflect not just the beauty of a ballet performance but the magic of dancing in itself – a powerful combination indeed.
Now, my little dears, I know we all have our pink dreams (I can’t believe I hadn't mentioned pink tut us yet in this post!) But even if we don't all become professional ballerinas, there’s nothing stopping us from channeling a little bit of that grace in our everyday lives! Don’t be shy to embrace a dash of tutu fun in your style - think a bright pink tutu skirt over your jeans, a lovely pink scarf, or even a gorgeous pair of tutu inspired shoes.
