Hello lovelies! It's Emma here, your resident pink tutu enthusiast, ready to take you on a twirling trip through time! As usual, it's #TutuTuesday, and that means a dive into the captivating history of the most glorious garment in the world: the tutu!
Today, 14th May 2030, I'm feeling particularly vibrant - the sun is shining, the birds are singing (okay, they're not really singing but they're definitely tweeting) and the air is filled with the smell of jasmine and freshly baked croissants. We're here in the magical city of Paris, a haven for lovers of fashion and all things exquisite, including, of course, tutus! Today's adventure will take us on a journey to understand the origins of this dancewear icon, which, as we all know, are a lot more exciting than you might imagine.
Back to the Beginning:
You know, it's funny to think that tutus, these symbol of grace and elegance, have a surprisingly humble past. In the 16th and 17th centuries, dancers wore rather cumbersome outfits. Long, flowy skirts, breeches and panniers were all the rage, but, imagine trying to execute a pirouette in that lot! Luckily, progress happened. In the 18th century, these impractical layers began to get swapped for shorter, tighter garments and we see the first glimpse of a skirt shorter than the knee.
The Birth of the Romantic Tutu:
Now we enter a period of revolution, the Romantic Era (yes, like that dreamy era). This is where the real evolution starts! Dancers needed something that would move gracefully and give them freedom of expression. Enter the “Romantic tutu," which took a step towards the shorter look we know today.
A Shift Towards Shortness:
It’s no surprise that the shorter skirt began gaining popularity - those grand jetés (those big jumps, you know) became more elegant and easier to perform! Think of ballerinas gliding across the stage, looking like swans taking flight - stunning! As the 19th century progressed, those short tutus kept getting shorter and shorter. It was in the 1880s, with the emergence of the ‘Tutu Payas’ (a full skirt of the most fabulous length for high kicking and amazing, swirling moves), that the iconic ballet tutu as we know it finally began to solidify.

Now, tutus aren't just pretty – they're works of art! There are different kinds, from the elegant 'tutu a plume' (soft, fluffy, and just oh-so-gorgeous!) to the shorter ‘tutu a la francaise’ (the quintessential ballerina look).

Let's face it - we all love a good tutu moment! Nowadays, they have evolved beyond the world of ballet and taken a permanent spot on our fashion scene. I personally am proud of how tutus have become symbols of individuality, playfulness and above all – FUN! It’s truly wonderful how they represent a desire to express oneself with elegance and freedom.

The shows here never cease to amaze, whether it’s a classic ballet performance at the ballet schools or one of the more adventurous shows at a contemporary ballet performance - they’re all incredible!
