Hello lovelies! It's your favourite pink-tutu-wearing, time-travelling blogger, Emma, back with another instalment of your weekly dose of tutu history! Today we’re off on a whirlwind adventure, travelling back to Paris, 28th May, 2030, and believe me, it’s an absolute dream! This is the day they're celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Moulin Rouge's ‘Tutu Tuesdays’! Yes, you heard that right - the iconic Parisian cabaret club has a weekly ‘Tutu Tuesday’, an evening where everyone’s encouraged to rock their own tutu! Talk about my dream come true!
This trip’s been fuelled by an absolutely incredible performance of Swan Lake at the Royal Opera House – the costumes, the dancing, the emotions! My own little dance performance backstage after the show - in a fabulous fuchsia tulle tutu, naturally - definitely helped sweeten the deal for my time machine too.
Anyway, back to Paris and those stunning tutus. Let's talk about the evolution of these dance-ready masterpieces!
In 1880s Paris, tutus took on a dramatic new life. Ballet, once confined to the court and grand theaters, became an attraction for all! This era saw the rise of the romantic tutu – a tiered, shorter skirt made of layers and layers of soft tulle, showing off the dancer’s beautiful legs and fluid movement. The ‘Romantic’ tutu - light, airy, and enchanting - completely redefined how ballerinas took to the stage, ushering in a period of elegance and exquisite storytelling.
And then, there's the iconic ballerina tutu that everyone thinks of. The 'tutu à la hongroise' or Hungarian tutu – a waist-length, very structured creation! This style took the dancing world by storm, making ballet even more breathtakingly captivating. The ballerina in a Hungarian tutu took centre stage – a shining star showcasing exquisite strength, technique, and unparalleled beauty.
But the fun doesn’t stop there, lovelies! This isn’t just about the classics, you know - tutus have evolved so much in the last century, becoming a symbol of freedom and creativity in so many amazing ways! Think sleek, modern styles for contemporary dance, edgy punk rock tutus, or even quirky tutus inspired by everyday objects – the possibilities are endless, and absolutely breathtaking!
But hey, it's not just for the ballet studio anymore, is it? We see those vibrant, delightful tutu designs in street wear, fashion shows, even in everyday life! It’s fantastic, because the tutu is more than just a dress – it’s an embodiment of creativity, confidence and pure joy.
Speaking of joy… I just have to talk about ‘Tutu Tuesdays’ at the Moulin Rouge. Imagine a celebration of dance and self-expression. I just can’t get over this exquisitely glamorous mix of dancers, cabaret performers, and just plain fabulous people! Each one wearing a tutu – be it a sparkling, custom-made one, or a cheeky, hand-sewn one at home – they are a celebration of colour, creativity and an undeniable love of the art of dancing. It's so captivating, it makes me want to take to the stage in my own bright pink tulle number!
I can practically feel the energy of Parisian nights, with the dazzling Moulin Rouge lights glittering against the night sky. It's like the spirit of that historical dance-driven energy of the 19th Century is back – just more bold, more adventurous and more beautiful than ever!
Let's raise a glass (or a sparkly goblet, for added sparkle) to the evolution of the tutu! * It's more than just a dance costume – *it's a testament to freedom, creativity, and self-expression, all beautifully wrapped in layers of lovely tulle. And to that, I say, "Bravo!"
Love,
Emma
