Now, I know what you’re thinking. "Emma, it's 2030, what could possibly be new to discover about tutus?" But trust me, darlings, there's always something new to learn about the beautiful, billowing, story-telling world of these dance-worthy delights.
This week, I find myself floating down a Parisian boulevard, the city humming with the magic of the arts, especially those wonderful theatrical shows. What’s extra special about this 6th August, 2030 is the reopening of the Opera Garnier. A glorious venue with all its history, its magnificent golden interiors, its soaring archways. A place that has held so many fabulous performances! Oh, I can hardly contain my excitement for all the incredible shows I’ll be watching!
Of course, as I sit here with a delectable cup of Earl Grey in the heart of this historic city, I couldn’t resist a peek into the Garnier’s storied past. You see, my lovelies, the ballet tutu is inextricably linked with the Grand Opera of Paris, with the legendary dancers who adorned its stages in the most beautiful and daring costumes.
You may be surprised to discover that the modern tutu as we know it is a relatively new creation! Imagine my utter shock when I discovered that the first classical tutu - the romantic one with a billowing skirt - wasn't even dreamt up until the early 19th century! Before that, the dancers wore long, elaborate gowns, the very opposite of the airy, whimsical tutu!
The change? It arrived hand-in-hand with the Romantic period in art and culture. Artists were celebrating nature, imagination, and freedom, and ballet became a crucial vehicle to express these ideas. And you can’t talk about that transition without mentioning the great Marie Taglioni, the woman who practically single-handedly brought the tutu to life! She was a pioneering dancer, my lovelies, the first to perform in this elegant, almost ethereal, outfit, revealing her silky calves to the awestruck public. The scandal! The thunderous applause! The utter revolution it sparked!
Now, a bit about this amazing Garnier. It’s considered to be a true icon of French art and architecture. Imagine it, darlings: a majestic building adorned with marble, statues, intricate mosaics, and the most gorgeous golden gilding, showcasing the highest craftsmanship. And it’s brimming with stories! Oh, and have I mentioned my lovely pink tutu? Well, it has a bit of history attached to it, too. ? I’d purchased it in one of my trips to the glorious past and had a chance to be styled in it by Coco Chanel herself! Isn’t that amazing! This tutu was made from the finest silk, its pink colour exuding elegance with a hint of playful audacity! That's the beauty of a tutu, don't you think? It can be whimsical and graceful, dramatic and ethereal - a symbol of so many moods and emotions.

They reflect the specific era and style of the ballet they're in – they are so much more dramatic, showcasing their own unique personality – so very theatrical, don't you agree? And they tell stories through the movement.

We have seen this classic outfit move with the times, becoming increasingly more free-flowing and less about restrictions – more contemporary, with more options in fabrics, textures, lengths – so they're really pushing the boundaries. Think layered tulle and unique designs! It’s like taking tutus on a journey – to the moon and beyond! ? And we haven’t even mentioned all the fabulous designs of today – the tutu isn't confined to traditional ballet anymore! They have taken to the street, appearing in fashion, film, and everyday life.
