It’s me, Emma, your favourite pink-tutu-clad time-travelling ballerina, back with another dose of tutu history for your #TutuTuesday!
Buckle up buttercups, because this week, we’re headed to... Tokyo!
Tokyo, the vibrant city that beats to the rhythm of life, fashion, and yes, you guessed it, BALLET! It’s a city where tradition meets modernity and a ballerina's tutu is the perfect expression of both.
On this lovely Tuesday, the 17th of September 2030, I've donned my latest find – a vibrant fuchsia tulle confection with a silver trim, a nod to Tokyo’s love of shimmering detail. (I picked it up at Harajuku, darling, simply divine! swoon).
Tokyo in 2030 is buzzing with ballet. This incredible city has a unique way of blending its historic ballet scene with modern innovations. Classical ballet is still adored, but contemporary ballet, a style that embraces both the beautiful and the quirky, is flourishing! It's exciting to see audiences being captivated by innovative choreography set against a backdrop of Tokyo's cutting-edge technological marvels.
Now, let's take a historical deep-dive into the wonderful world of the tutu!
Did you know that the evolution of the tutu, my darling, mirrors the fascinating evolution of the art of ballet itself?
Let's begin with the early years… Imagine billowing silk skirts – think medieval times, long and grand – that hindered dancers' movements. Oh, how restrictive! Enter Marie Taglioni, a French ballet dancer and a true pioneer! In the 1830s, she embraced change, a groundbreaking change! She replaced the cumbersome skirts with a short, lighter, airy creation. Imagine the impact on ballet! The dancer's movements could flow freely and with exquisite grace, an inspiration to all aspiring ballerinas since!
In the 19th century, the Romantic tutu blossomed. Think of shimmering gauze, layers upon layers. Oh, so poetic! It embraced elegance and a sense of ethereal flight. And guess what, my dears, this dreamy style lives on, reinvented and reimagined in modern performances, like a delicate ghost from the past!
But the tutu's journey doesn't end there! In the late 19th century, the "Classical" tutu took centre stage. This masterpiece featured multiple layers of stiffened tulle, creating that majestic bell shape we know and adore. It highlighted the ballerina's form and its breathtaking movements. A statement! A beacon! The perfect visual representation of athleticism and artistry.
The tutu is no static, one-dimensional garment, but rather a powerful emblem of a captivating ballet performance! Throughout the ages, it's been the subject of reinterpretation, blending the classic with the contemporary, the extravagant with the understated, like a beautiful chameleon!
I must tell you about “Ballet Street”, Tokyo's innovative street dance fusion scene! I watched in awe as ballet dancers combined their artistry with cutting-edge street dance moves, all while wearing their very own unique spin on the traditional tutu. The crowd, oh, the energy, it was electric! A testament to the constant reinvention of this timeless garment!
This afternoon, I plan to immerse myself in a traditional ballet at the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, a prestigious hall renowned for its beauty and grandeur! Then, I’m indulging in a shopping spree, to capture some more pink tutus of course, followed by a delightful dinner of Tokyo’s iconic ramen – such a delightful experience!
As the sun dips low in the sky over this dazzling city, I invite you to twirl alongside me!
