It's your favourite pink-loving ballerina blogger, Emma, here, ready to whisk you away on another historical journey through the captivating world of the tutu! This Tuesday's #TutuTuesday is extra special as we celebrate the fascinating fashion evolution of the tutu. Today we're zooming back to the early 19th century, right before the era of the Romantic tutu! It's been a rather busy week, my dears! I just travelled back from a captivating Parisian ballet performance at the Palais Garnier. You wouldn't believe the amazing costume designs! All lace, satin, and flowing tulle - truly an ode to the Romantics, with a hint of Parisian chic, of course. The delicate whispers of tulle dancing under the glittering chandeliers – sheer perfection! But the best part, my lovelies, was that after the performance I found a charming little boutique nestled in the back streets of Montmartre. A vintage treasure trove overflowing with tulle and satin! Naturally, I just had to add to my already substantial tutu collection... what can I say, I just love the joy and twirl of a beautifully crafted tutu. ?

Before The Romantic Tutu:
Imagine if you will, a world without the dreamy Romantic tutu, the one we adore today. You can hardly imagine it, can you? Before this gorgeous tulle masterpiece graced our stages, ballerinas were adorned in very restrictive costumes. Their garments, my lovelies, were more akin to tight-fitting, floor-length skirts. Quite the contrast to the ethereal beauty of the tutu, wouldn't you say? Think of corseted dresses that hindered movement, no room to leap or twirl! Just imagine trying to execute a pirouette in one of those creations – a disastrous outcome for any ballerina!
Now, picture the emergence of ballet in the early 19th century. It was all about elegance, a refinement of the previously dramatic and passionate performance. And with that change came a transformation in ballet's very essence! This period marks the transition from heavy, corseted dresses to a lighter, more flexible approach to attire. And let's face it, who doesn't love the sheer, almost mythical, beauty of the Romantic tutu?

This is the style we know and adore, my darlings! As we transitioned into the 20th century, the length of the tutu was transformed. The skirt got shorter, showcasing the ballerina's elegant legs in their full glory. Gone was the graceful sweep of the long skirt, replaced with a focus on the graceful athleticism of the ballerina, all the more impactful against the backdrop of a magnificent set. It’s so vibrant, playful and yet beautifully elegant. Perfect for dazzling choreography, graceful leaps and flowing turns.

I bet you wouldn't know that the “Babydoll” dress we love so much is heavily influenced by ballet costumes. Remember those short and breezy designs that give us that lovely princess feel? Well, the origins are strongly connected to the ballet tutu, with a mix of short-sleeved design and flirty volume! For now, my lovelies, I have to run. There’s a rather exciting ballet happening later tonight in the heart of London. This is one of my favourite theaters; they’re renowned for their gorgeous sets and incredible costumes. Imagine the twirling tutus, glistening under the chandeliers – sheer magical! And what could be better after the show, my darlings, than to visit my favourite vintage boutique near Piccadilly? A day of elegance, tutus, and a delightful glass of champagne. I can't think of a more wonderful way to spend a day. I can't wait to see what new ballet trends the future holds, and perhaps, my dearest friends, we’ll be the ones leading the next wave of tutu trends, all wrapped up in pink and elegance.
