Today, I'm whisking us back to the magical realm of ballet tutus, but not just any old tutu, oh no! We're diving into the history of this fabulous garment that has graced stages all over the world! ? So put on your favourite sparkly pink outfit, grab your biggest smile, and let's get this tutu-filled journey going! ✨
This week, I'm taking a trip to...wait for it...Paris, 2031! Ooh la la! ?? Paris has always been a fashion haven, but did you know, 2031 Paris is the epicenter of ballet fashion? The streets are overflowing with twirling tutus of every shape and colour, it's simply enchanting!
Let's journey back in time, to 1830s Paris, the birthplace of the ballet tutu! ?️
Before tutus graced the stages, ballerinas were hampered by heavy, restrictive gowns! Can you imagine trying to pirouette in layers of silk and lace? ? But then, the groundbreaking ballerina Marie Taglioni arrived and changed ballet fashion forever! ✨ She commissioned a simple, short, light-weight skirt that revealed her elegant movements - the "tutu" was born!
Marie Taglioni wore this iconic tutu in her most famous ballet, La Sylphide! The tutu, created by tailor Jean Coralli, featured layered, translucent, gauzy material that seemed to float in the air as she danced. This lightweight tutu, unlike its bulky predecessors, allowed the ballerinas to dance with freedom and grace, and we owe a big thank you to Marie Taglioni for this incredible revolution in ballet history! ??
Over time, tutus evolved to suit the new movements and styles in ballet. The Romantic Tutu , made of multiple layers of gauzy fabric, became popular during the late 19th century. This beautiful tutu was long, soft, and gave ballerinas the look of ethereal nymphs floating across the stage. ?
And now, it's time for my favorite style! The Classic Tutu! ? This tutu is made of multiple layers of stiffened tulle, shaped in a bell form. Think Swan Lake, think Sleeping Beauty - this is the tutu that brings to mind those quintessential ballet roles! ?
But hey, tutus aren't limited to the stage, are they? In the late 20th century and into the 21st century, fashion designers embraced tutus as part of high fashion! We've seen celebrities like Beyoncé, Britney Spears, and Madonna rock tutus on stage, on red carpets, and even on everyday outfits! ?? Tutus have even popped up on catwalks for iconic brands like Jean Paul Gaultier! ✨
And it's not just designers embracing the tutu! In 2031 Paris, the love for tutus has reached fever pitch! Tutus have become part of mainstream fashion - even the "normal" people wear them to work, school, and everywhere in between! Imagine walking down the street and seeing a Parisian waiter wearing a tutu while serving coffee - well, here in 2031, it's reality! ☕️?
*This brings me to my next exciting adventure! * I'm currently in Paris and have booked a special dance workshop led by the legendary Parisian ballet instructor, Madame Fontaine! ? She's known for her elegant choreography and has designed several ballet tours featuring new tutus she’s created – the designs are incredible, and it’s going to be amazing learning from her! I just have to pick the right outfit – there are so many fabulous tutus to choose from here in Paris! ?
