#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History on 2031-08-19

Buckle up your ballet slippers, girls, as we travel through time in the luxurious carriages of the Eurostar (because honestly, who needs a DeLorean when you can travel in style?) to uncover the sartorial wonders of the 1900s. Yes, even before the glorious dawn of pink tutus as everyday wear!

Today, August 19th, 2031, I find myself standing on a bustling Parisian street, the air thick with the aroma of fresh bread and pastries, and the iconic Eiffel Tower sparkling like a beacon against the vibrant sky. You can imagine the excitement, right? The chance to see the sights, immerse myself in the city’s enchanting atmosphere…and, of course, delve into the enchanting world of ballet history!

So, let’s talk tutus!

Back in the early 1900s, the ballet world was just beginning to embrace the tutu as we know it. Picture this, girls – dancers were literally weighed down by yards and yards of fabric! They’d be encased in corseted layers, heavy silk skirts, and massive amounts of fabric, all topped with massive wigs and cumbersome jewelry. Now, can you imagine how restrictive that must have been for our darling dancers? It's no wonder their movements were less graceful than the floating, airborne beauty we experience today!

However, a revolutionary shift occurred as the early 1900s unfolded – romanticism came in, bringing a whole new era to ballet. It wasn’t just about pretty, stiff costumes and precise choreography anymore. This new era was about emotions, expressive movement, and telling stories through dance! And what did that require? You guessed it, a less restricting, more lightweight costume that gave dancers freedom of movement.

Imagine the excitement, girls! Suddenly, a new era of elegant movement, expressive leaps, and intricate footwork! The emphasis on ethereal, flowing costumes with tulle and layered silk started to rise, taking away from the restrictive nature of earlier dance attire. Now, let's talk about my absolute favourite…

This dreamy design was born out of the genius of a young man named Marie Taglioni. You can call her the Queen Bee of ballerina fashion, or the first tututist, if you like. A dancer with revolutionary ideas and an unwavering passion, Marie became known for her light and airy performance style. She, along with her brilliant collaborators, helped create costumes that reflected her grace and airy movements, inspiring generations of ballerinas!

Marie’s “La Sylphide”, which premiered in 1832, was a revelation. The lightweight, layered tutu she wore helped to elevate her ethereal, graceful dance. Can you imagine the roar of applause? There's something utterly whimsical about walking under the steel latticework, looking up at the delicate lattice of its construction, reminding me of a ballet tutu in its airy lightness and strength.

Of course, a girl’s gotta get a little shopping done, too!

Even in 20th century Paris, I spotted the most stunning ballet boutiques, where I picked up a vintage-inspired black and white tutu with a pearl trim, so gorgeous! Oh, darling, can you imagine how many envious glances I got from passers-by as I waltzed around the city in my beautiful tutu? Even being born and raised in the beautiful countryside of Derbyshire in 2031, my connection to ballet is all about timeless values of grace, elegance, and artistry.
