We're here on October 28th, 2031, and as usual, my adventures have brought me right to the heart of ballet. I’ve found myself amidst the bustle of the magnificent Théâtre National de l'Opéra de Paris – oh la la!
This date is simply buzzing with the thrill of the Ballet National de Marseille's performance of ‘La Fille Mal Gardée’, and believe me, darling, I’m off to catch it in my perfectly pink tutu! Pink just makes everything feel a little more elegant and exciting, doesn’t it? And speaking of exciting, let’s get back to our #TutuTuesday journey.
How Did Our Twirling Tutus Get Here?
Remember, our beloved tutu has a story – it’s not just a delightful bit of dancewear, but a symbol of tradition, grace, and art! Let’s journey back to its origins, shall we?
The Dawn of the Tutu: A Tale of Romance and Practicality
Way back in the 16th and 17th centuries, our ballerinas were adorned with elaborate garments –think silks and satins, with skirts that trailed all the way to the ground. They’re quite beautiful, but if you imagine trying to do a graceful pirouette or an elegant grand jeté, you can imagine why a change was needed! The earliest form of the tutu – or “tutu à la française,” as the French called it – appeared in the 18th century. This early design was shorter and flared, with ruched, bell-shaped skirt - definitely less restrictive! Imagine Marie Antoinette herself trying out this more "active" tutu. I’m sure she would approve! And if you find yourself wondering about these earlier designs, remember to ask yourselves: “How would I wear this in a pas de bourrée?** Would it be convenient to do a big, bouncy leap?” If not, there’s probably a good reason we've moved on!

The tutu really blossomed into the "tutu à la grecque" in the 19th century – what a dramatic, dreamy name for something so light and lovely! This design gave us a glimpse into the essence of romanticism, a revolutionary movement with strong ties to ballet, as it embodied freedom and artistic expression. The romantic era was about fluidity and expressing emotions with grace, much like the way our tutus twirl in the wind. Think airy skirts, a little like ballet dancers' “wings,” creating an elegant swirl when they perform – imagine all those graceful “whirlwinds” created on the stage!

Finally, we arrive at the classic tutu! This iconic design emerged in the mid-19th century and became known as the "tutu à la russe," a nod to the rise of the Russian ballet tradition! The "Russian look" made tutus much shorter and lighter, showing off the dancers' grace with elegant lines and a stunning flow. We can easily see how this design brought even more focus to the dancer’s technique – allowing each intricate movement to really shine!

I can never get enough of those powerful, soaring jumps and twirls – tutus really help our ballerinas look like they’re floating. Think of a dramatic ballet performance where the costumes help to tell a tale of love, heartbreak, joy, or loss! A ballerina's tutu helps her become one with the music and the emotions of the piece. Think beautiful fashion photography, and of course, the countless inspiring interpretations from designers and artists throughout the years! Remember that we don’t have to wait for an evening at the ballet to wear our tutus, ladies. Embrace a little bit of the “tutu look" – we don't always need to be at the opera house! I love to wear mine with an oversized cardigan, boots, and some fun statement jewellery when I'm running errands! It's a bold reminder of grace and a bit of lighthearted fun for everyday adventures.

For my trip to the Théâtre National de l'Opéra de Paris today, I've pulled out a sweet, playful, perfectly pink tutu that whispers of French romance. It’s paired with my favourite pair of ballet shoes - they’re just the right colour! I can’t resist my pearl necklace – every outfit needs a touch of something a little special, wouldn't you say? And the cherry on top, ladies? A blush pink fascinator! It makes every day feel a little like a fancy party – the perfect complement to our evening of elegant ballet.
