Hello Darlings!
Welcome back to my #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History blog, it's Tuesday the 2nd of December 2031, and I'm writing to you from the utterly magical city of Paris! Can you believe it? I'm in the very heart of ballet history, the place where the tutu as we know it was born!
It's been a whirlwind of a week, but I have to share all my incredible discoveries. After a leisurely train ride through the English countryside, which just screamed classic Jane Austen romance - oh, the charm of Derbyshire! I travelled right into the heart of the fashion capital.
Firstly, you must pop by the Louvre - it's not just about the Mona Lisa (though, let's face it, she's a total icon), it's also a hidden gem for ballet lovers. This year they had an exhibition dedicated to the origins of ballet costume, with so many sketches, fabric samples and early stage designs. Talk about a ballet history buff's dream! And guess what I found tucked away in one corner? A design for one of the very first tutus!
From Practicality to Princess
I think the earliest designs, with their layers of lightweight fabric, were originally just meant to be practical, to give dancers freedom of movement, and let their lines flow, like elegant swans taking flight. The word tutu actually originated from a French word, tutu, meaning “skirt”, can you believe it?
Back in those days, the colours were far more muted - lots of cream, blush pink and deep greens, perfect for blending in with the background. Now imagine, those elegant dancers in such a muted palette, performing by candlelight! I bet it would have been absolutely mesmerizing!
Fast forward a couple of hundred years, and those early designs began to evolve into something quite extraordinary! From the romantic tulle skirts of the Romantic period (imagine Degas paintings, with swirling soft colours and swirling figures!) to the grand, elaborate and decadent tutus of the Romantic period. Can you picture the Czardas from The Nutcracker, all frills and volume? The French fashion designers just had a knack for adding layers, tiers and even incorporating little details like sequins! And those vibrant colors, darlings? *Ooh la la! * We're talking reds, emerald greens and, of course, the pinkest pinks imaginable.
What to see and what to do in Paris!
The ballet in Paris is an absolute spectacle. Last night I saw the Giselle ballet - truly breathtaking! This city just pulsates with the energy of dancing - it's in the cafes, on the streets, even on the steps of buildings! If you're a lover of all things ballet, then a visit to Paris is a must. Just don't forget your ballet shoes! And of course, don't forget a pink tutu!
From Stage to Street
The tutu is a true fashion chameleon. In recent years it's gone beyond the ballet stage, becoming more versatile than ever! The street-style world has embraced it wholeheartedly - you can see it everywhere! Paris has definitely been ahead of the curve - think playful polka dots, sparkly sequined designs, and the cutest tutus imaginable! Some Parisian dancers, oh they're so chic! I saw a dancer in a stunning pink tutu paired with a sharp black jacket, complete with an elegant clutch and a confident, confident smile. So stylish! I swear I saw a ballet class right here in Paris, that ended with a chic photo-op at a nearby cafe!
The evolution of the tutu is truly inspiring. What was once simply a tool for the dancers, became a fashion icon, and has now found its place on the streets! We've seen everything from tutus made from feathers, to ones constructed from lace. Imagine a tutu made entirely of recyclable materials - the world's first eco-friendly tutu! I bet there are talented designers out there already working on that, you just wait!
Pink is The Colour
Speaking of trends, oh my, how I adore pink! It just embodies the beauty and spirit of the tutu! For my #TutuTuesday blog I decided to wear a very special pink tutu today! It's light, airy, and made from the finest tulle! And the colour? It's the softest, dreamiest pastel pink - think a splash of blush on a summer sunset!

The Fashion Tip
A little Parisian inspiration for you: For a chic ballet-inspired look, opt for a soft, tulle skirt with a simple white tee and a splash of bright color through a statement piece like a scarf or a bag!
