#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History on 2032-01-06

This week, I'm hopping on the time-traveling express, with my trusty pink tutu tucked neatly into my travel bag (it goes everywhere with me, you know!), and we're going on a trip to… drumroll … 2032!

The future! Can you believe it? Honestly, even with all the crazy technological leaps, fashion just gets better and better. You see, I love that time travel is about so much more than just learning about the past - it's about finding out where fashion is headed!

And trust me, in 2032, tutus are still all the rage. It seems the love for a good twirl transcends even centuries!

Now, on to this fascinating journey.

Okay, I'm in a time warp - in my perfectly pink tutu, naturally! It's the 6th of January 2032, and in New York City, the city that never sleeps (and never goes without a sparkly show), it's just the place to be. There's a *giant New Year's Eve ball drop, which they call “The Times Square Tutu Drop”. * It's a massive sparkly, pink tulle tutu that takes forever to go up in the air and then falls down again.

And, I am absolutely there, right in the thick of it! This place is just electrifying - the air crackles with energy and anticipation. And everyone's wearing tutus - imagine, an entire city celebrating in pink tulle!

Of course, with my love for all things tutu, I am absolutely glued to the spectacle.

But you know me - I can't just stand there and watch! I've been practicing a bit of impromptu choreography – with the Times Square Tutu as the stage, the neon-lit skyscrapers as my audience, and the city’s joyous cheers as my soundtrack! You'd have thought I was the star of my own private ballet!

But I know that this spectacular, dazzling celebration wouldn't exist without the history of ballet. Let's go back, way back, and talk about those early tutus.

To understand why tutus have lasted all this time, we have to start at the beginning.

Can you believe that once upon a time, dancers used to wear dresses - full skirts, often trailing behind them. But honestly, how do you even jump in that much fabric?!

The first hint of a real tutu came around the 1840s - **Maria Taglioni, a celebrated ballerina, made waves in Paris, her short tutu-like skirt the star of the show. It was all about graceful movement and highlighting her effortless jumps.

That’s when the ballerina really came into her own. She stopped being a shadow to the danseur noble (that's a fancy way of saying “male dancer”) and started grabbing all the attention!

The “romantic tutu,” as it's now called, was the perfect invention - just enough fabric to catch the light and swirl around, yet short and fitted enough for agile movements. This was a total fashion breakthrough – the starting point for the ballet tutus that would become such a defining symbol.

It’s been said that Marie Taglioni's revolutionary tutu sparked the ballet revolution!

From there, tutus just continued to evolve! The next big shift? The classical tutu.

The 1880s saw the birth of the famous “pagne tutu” (also called the “classical” tutu). This type of tutu, with its stiffer, more layers of tulle, gave the ballerinas an elegant, yet dramatic look. It wasn't about fluid movements – the classical tutu is more about grace and controlled leaps, an important style in classical ballets. It really had a strong and rigid look! They had to learn to make graceful movement in these restrictive, but impressive creations!

Remember the time I tried on that very old classical tutu I found at the Derbyshire Ballet Shop? You know the one, it had this giant frill around it and looked more like a fluffy ballgown than something to jump in? I think my tiny Derbyshirian grandmother wore something just like it when she went to see The Nutcracker.

By the 20th century, the tutu had taken on various forms. We had the “layered tutu,” also called the “layered tutu.” (It wasn't just about looking good, you know - those extra layers helped create a fuller, more dramatic effect as dancers jumped and twirled). It really became the definitive shape of tutus for performances - you could tell when you were watching a ballet when those beautiful layers of pink, white or white silk danced through the air.

But the 20th century wasn't all about classical tutus! Experimentation began to shine, and that's where those revolutionary "contemporary tutus" were born. Imagine loose fabric, playful silhouettes and a lot more free movement - modern dance broke free from rigid tutu rules and allowed dancers to express themselves in exciting new ways. I absolutely loved that moment - modern ballet - I got a tutu custom made for the very first time - made from light-weight stretch chiffon.

This brought out a new generation of ballerinas – and even though there was the classical ballerina, with her grace and perfect lines – it’s this modern ballet look that gave birth to ballet stars like Misty Copeland and Michaela DePrince.

So, there you have it – the fascinating journey of the tutu! It's not just about the dance, darling! Ballet is an integral part of fashion history! Ballet clothes have definitely made their mark.
