#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History on 2032-06-29

Greetings, my darling Tutu Twirlers! It’s your favourite time of the week – Tutu Tuesday! Grab a cuppa (or maybe a fancy latte), put on your most dazzling pink tutu (I’m in a divine bubblegum pink this week, darling!), and settle in for a trip down memory lane with yours truly, Emma, the pink tutu wearing, time-traveling fashionista!

Oh, the adventures of this travelling ballerina! This week, my time machine took me to the heart of tutudom - Paris, no less! Oh, Paris! A city of romance, croissants, and, of course, exquisite dance performances. It was here I landed, swirling around a particularly chic patisserie, in a whirlwind of silk, tulle, and a very delightful cherry pastry (that I later realised was, of course, vegan!).

But darling, let's rewind the clock back to 2032, to a world not so far away from our own! Did you know today's the anniversary of one of the most significant events in ballet history?! Oh yes, you've guessed it, my lovely readers! The Royal Ballet is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of their incredible rendition of The Sleeping Beauty! I was so thrilled to be at Covent Garden last night, it's truly an evening I will cherish.

But darling, tell me, have you ever wondered where those iconic fluffy tutus we see on stage actually originated? Where did it all begin? I have a hunch you’ve got a few questions bubbling up inside! Don't worry, I've got the answers for you - it's tutu time!

Now, darlings, a ballet performance wouldn’t be the same without a magnificent, swirling, breathtaking tutu, would it? The tutu has a very rich history. It’s almost as though these ethereal creations were destined to be spun from a whirlwind of romanticism!

Believe it or not, darling, tutus actually were born from a simpler garment called the tunic. Yes, the humble tunic, which would’ve been seen on many a lady in 19th century Europe, transformed into the modern ballerina’s statement piece. As the century rolled on, ballet itself began to change – ballerinas were performing more complicated choreography, and needed their clothes to follow suit. They wanted to show off their powerful, graceful moves, and the tunic was becoming too restrictive, darling!

It was a Russian ballet choreographer, Marius Petipa, who’s credited for taking this movement from humble to magnificent! In his production of “La Bayadère” in 1877, the stage shimmered with an astonishing, “almost invisible”, light tutu! The dancer’s silhouette seemed to float with ease and beauty, as it had been freed from the bulkiness of the tunic.

As the tutu's form evolved, so did the designs. Gone were the days of just a plain tunic, and in their place, tiers upon tiers of frills began to dominate the stage, making it more and more eye-catching. This was the period known as the “Romantic” era in ballet, darling, and the tutu was very much an important player in this movement!

The 19th and early 20th century were filled with revolutionary choreographers, including Anna Pavlova and Vaslav Nijinsky. Now, my darling readers, both of them took the tutu in some wonderfully creative directions, incorporating intricate and complex fabrics, styles and silhouettes to take ballet to new heights!

From the mid 20th century onwards, the tutu truly established itself as an essential part of the ballerina’s wardrobe. They began to be designed in an extraordinary range of styles and colours - long, short, multiple layers, and sometimes even without a single stitch of fabric.

The beauty of the tutu doesn’t just live in ballet’s history. It also sits right in front of us - right on the stages and in studios around the world, darling! Every ballerina's dream is to gracefully wear one, and, well, mine too! I would go completely overboard and create a giant, enormous tutu that was the size of a house, you see. I just have to see it! But what fun would it be if it weren't pink! Pink is simply the most amazing colour in the entire world, if you ask me!

I absolutely adore attending a ballet performance and just getting swept away by the intricate detail of a beautifully made tutu. I am truly inspired by these magnificent works of art.

Today's tutus are meticulously crafted and tailored for a specific performance and dancer. And for each dancer to take to the stage in one, there’s an intricate process – hours and hours spent in fittings, rehearsals and even days of stitching - they all make sure the tutu sits just right!

Oh, darling, imagine you are surrounded by racks and racks of sparkling tutus, each more beautiful than the last! And you're on the hunt for the perfect one, something truly exquisite and unique! Well, this is what a visit to the “backstage” wardrobe of a prestigious ballet company feels like! Truly decadent. Oh, if only we could peek in on their secret tutu-filled world! I could go on, darling, but the truth is, nothing can really describe the beauty of a real tutu!

Oh darling, you just must see Swan Lake, performed by the Royal Ballet. Every time I see their rendition of Odette, she is wearing such a breathtakingly intricate tutu, complete with exquisite embellishments – **pure artistry! It leaves you completely speechless, darling! You have to see it for yourself. It truly captures the romance, grace and poetry that are at the heart of the ballet!

I would give my pink tutu for a peek at a wardrobe like this, to see what styles they're making now! And if I'm being completely honest with you, my dear Tutu Twirlers, I could wear one all day, every day!
