#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History on 2032-07-20

Hello, darlings! It's Emma here, your resident tutu enthusiast and time-traveling fashionista, bringing you another #TutuTuesday filled with frills, frou-frou, and a whole lot of history! Buckle up, my lovelies, because we're going on a whirlwind tour through time to discover how the tutu transformed from a humble costume to the iconic symbol of grace and elegance we know and adore today!

Today's date? Well, isn't it just July 20th, 2032? Fancy that!

It's such a special day for a trip to the ballet! The Bolshoi Theatre is putting on "La Sylphide" tonight - just divine!

Right, onto those magnificent tutus!

The story of the tutu is truly a magical one! Our journey begins in 19th century France, at the grand Parisian Opera House. The ballerinas of the time were adorned in long, flowing skirts that hindered their movement. They yearned for something more practical, something that allowed them to spin, leap, and express themselves freely.

Enter the tutu - or more accurately, the tutu's earliest ancestors!

In the 1830s, a pioneering dancer named Marie Taglioni challenged the norms with her revolutionary performance of "La Sylphide." Instead of a heavy, trailing skirt, she opted for a much shorter, gauzy skirt with multiple layers of tulle! This change was a game-changer! Imagine how restrictive those long, stiff gowns must have been. The freedom, the airiness - oh my! This 'demi-tutu' (yes, it's almost the classic tutu shape!) let her fly across the stage!

Oh, the thrill of that very first demi-tutu, darlings!

The early tutus were often referred to as “The Taglioni Tutus.” *Taglioni was my true fashion hero, a legend who had the guts to do things differently. *

This era brought a whole new era of fluidity and elegance, and the ballet world was revolutionised !

As the 19th century rolled on, the tutu continued to evolve. By the 1870s, the "Classical" or “full-length” tutu, which is a more voluminous and flamboyant version, with its flowing tulle cascading over a shorter, knee-length underskirt, really took the spotlight.

Now, who wouldn’t want to float around like that, surrounded by an abundance of the most beautiful tulle and lace imaginable? The artistry of the dance itself is mirrored in the sheer magic of those exquisite costumes! **

That era of "Giselle," "La Bayadere," and "Sleeping Beauty," gave birth to an array of truly unforgettable tutu creations, each more glamorous than the last. *Remember all those iconic ballet roles that make our heartstrings sing? The tutus have always been part of what gives these performances that extra dose of *je ne sais quoi!

For the rest of the century, the tutu remained an absolute staple, a symbol of exquisite femininity and artistry. It just oozed ballet! It went hand-in-hand with that feeling of complete creative expression.

From those earliest inspirations, to today's modern styles, tutus still have a major place in dance. And that’s what keeps me coming back for more - I'm in awe of how they adapt and stay fresh throughout history.

The early 20th century saw the tutu diversify with styles like the "Romantic Tutu", which gave us a shorter, whimsical feel (great for dreams of nymphs and sprites!). I just adore those wispy, billowing, weightless layers of tulle.

You may be thinking, well what about the men? While they were not going to be twirling around in tutus, that's when they started rocking the *"Romantic Era costume", a long, flowing white shirt with loose trousers - a striking, classic look!

And this century saw the tutu get even more innovative, thanks to twentieth-century choreographers who pushed boundaries, giving tutus all sorts of exciting forms, even going beyond ballet to other styles of dance.

This really sparked my modern ballet fascination! Contemporary ballet and modern dance, with tutus in bold colours and untraditional styles! These are just as important as the classics. They bring the WOW factor to a performance. They take boldness to new heights - *the very thing that pushes boundaries to help create some of those *memorable modern performances! I love seeing the tutus really evolve alongside the changes in the way people dance, even to hip hop and contemporary genres.

Don't worry, classics will always be classics. Always. But seeing what's new on the scene is just as thrilling! We should celebrate how both classical and modern styles just complement one another - a little like my time travelling!

Think hours and hours of precision hand-sewing and painstaking layering! * *I know that many people think these are made in a factory, but some of the finest tutus are created from start to finish by skilled individuals with real craftsmanship - that's how you get those truly incredible tutus, the kind that stop you in your tracks! There is so much thought, artistry, and skill that go into them, they are far more than just clothes!
