Helloooo my darlings! It's Emma here, your resident tutu-obsessed time traveller, back for another #TutuTuesday! As always, I'm channeling my inner ballerina, rocking a gloriously pink tutu – today, it's a fabulous confection of layers and tulle, fit for a queen, of course. ?
This week, my time machine has deposited me smack-bang in the heart of 2032! You wouldn't believe how exciting it is. Imagine – we've got self-lacing shoes, flying cars... the future is truly here! But for me, nothing beats a good old ballet performance, even in this futuristic world! I’m going to the Royal Opera House, it's one of the grandest theatres in all the land – London, you see – and today is the opening night of ‘The Sleeping Beauty.’ Just thinking about those glorious costumes sends shivers down my spine!
Now, before I lose myself in the enchanting world of 'The Sleeping Beauty', let's dive into today's historical lesson. Get comfy, grab a cuppa and prepare to be transported through time...
A Short History of the Tutu
Today’s #TutuTuesday takes us to the early 1800s, where fashion was quite different! Ladies wore huge skirts, all ruffles and layers. Imagine how impractical that must have been for a ballerina! So, enter the tutu! This airy garment, made of layers and layers of tulle, liberated ballerinas, allowing for graceful movements. Gone were the bulky skirts, and in their place, a revolutionary piece of clothing – the iconic tutu!
Now, tutus weren't all created equal – each style serves a specific purpose. You see, there are two main types of tutus: the Romantic tutu and the Classical tutu. Let’s chat about them:
Romantic Tutus
The Romantic tutu, also known as the "soft" or "bouffant" tutu, emerged in the early days of ballet's "Romantic" era. It's distinguished by its wispy layers of tulle, which, you guessed it, are gathered at the waist and then flare out beautifully. Think ‘La Sylphide’ or ‘Giselle’ - all flowy gracefulness. They often featured longer layers of tulle cascading towards the feet, adding a whimsical touch.
Classical Tutus
Later, in the mid 19th century, came the “Classical” tutu, also called the “hard” tutu. These ones are a tad different. They are much shorter than Romantic tutus – often stopping just above the knee. Think about ‘Swan Lake’ and ‘The Nutcracker’. The bodice is snug fitting and the skirt, shaped by a structured petticoat, usually involves many, many layers of tulle, for a dramatic look. The layers of tulle give a lovely stiff shape, like a delicate little lampshade, perfect for grand, elegant, jumps and turns.
These, however, aren't the only styles, though they’re certainly the most common! Imagine a little mermaid – that's a "fishtail" tutu for you. Or imagine an opera – that’s a "pas de deux" tutu, a grand design for the duet scene, usually adorned with sequins and glittering detail!
Pink Tutu: The History!
As for pink, it became a dominant tutu color in the early 1900s, representing innocence and delicacy – ideal for fairytale stories! Think of it, it really embodies the elegance and grace of ballet! And let's be honest, pink just goes perfectly with a tutu, doesn't it? ?
I've even got a collection of vintage pink tutus. One of my favourites was created in the late 1950s and is absolutely breathtaking, all ruffles, soft pinks and pastel hues. The history is woven into the fabric itself - I wear it with pride whenever I perform.
Now, back to 2032! The train to London is an incredible invention – it’s all floating and whizzing around, taking me straight into the bustling city. My friends and I are planning an elaborate evening to celebrate this incredible new technology, combining a spectacular evening gown and a fantastic pink tutu with some incredible accessories! Think sparkly high-heels and an out-of-this-world crown. I'm even bringing some shimmering pink nail polish - perfect for adding some magic to an evening!
