Hello, darlings! It's Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood tutu enthusiast, and it's #TutuTuesday! Grab your pinkest tulle, your brightest smile, and a cuppa - because today we're waltzing through the glorious history of the ballet tutu.
As always, we're diving into the world of those fabulous frills. But this week, I'm stepping a bit closer to home, not literally, of course. You know me, always time-hopping and pirouetting through the past, chasing those enchanting whispers of the ballet.
Today, however, we’re turning the spotlight onto 2032, specifically, 2 November - the date that happened to fall on a Tuesday, as it did for this particular post - the most glorious date of all, I might add! Now, where did my time-hopping adventures lead me this time? Let’s just say it involved some impressive railway tracks, some breathtaking scenery, and an enchanting little dance performance right there on the platform – but I can’t spoil the surprise! Let’s get back to tutus, shall we?
A Twirl Through Time:
Okay, my fellow twirling wonders, let's travel back to 2032 and chat about tutus in this period! This time, let’s see what’s happened in our beloved tutu world…
While our little tutu companions might seem a recent creation to some, my darlings, they have a long and fascinating story, a real fairy-tale, and we're diving into their origins right now. It was way back in the 1800s that tutus as we know them first graced the stages of the world! Yes, we owe a huge debt to a ballerina named Marie Taglioni for her graceful movements. She introduced the world to what we know now as the romantic tutu!
It was a simple, flowing, white dress that resembled a nightgown, not dissimilar to our more recent Romantic Tutu. This allowed the ballerinas more freedom of movement for all the beautiful poses and pirouettes that they wanted to perform.
In 2032, they had this beautiful idea – I have to say, this particular period was bursting with lovely ideas! – they decided to bring back those classical and romantic tutu shapes, adding in new variations. The Romantic Tutu remains a true favourite - imagine floating clouds in the most luscious pinks, spun to perfection – ah, it's almost too romantic, even for a little old me!
But 2032 wasn’t done there – let’s just say I'd been buying up some beautiful silk materials! It wasn't just the tutu designs; it was everything that was a little whimsical and feminine. I mean, tutus don’t need much but there was always room for those added details.
They weren't simply stuck to that 1800s look either. Over the years, many tutus took inspiration from nature, from art, even from dance styles themselves, resulting in unique styles, colours, and, of course, different shapes of tutus.
You may not be surprised to know that the tutus I most enjoyed in 2032 were the ones that made me think of flowers, with delicate petals made of the most amazing lace! You’d often find little jeweled embellishments or even a pearl or two, or maybe some satin ribbons that gently trailed, with beautiful beaded fringing – oh the delight of it all!
But darling, tutus don’t stay locked into their fancy dresses and elaborate sets. They are an essential part of a balerinas life – right from ballet school onwards. Yes, that’s right! Little dancers practice every day in their little tutus! What more encouraging sight could there be?
The Tutu – For Every Ballerina:
Now we've been through the story of the tutu so far and how it's continued in 2032 - you must have been absolutely dazzled by how it evolved. I hope I have made your day extra pink. The great thing about these darling garments is that you can find something for any age. My time-traveling escapades have shown me that little tutu lovers, budding ballerinas everywhere, can enjoy their favourite style, all while wearing them!
The perfect little outfit, isn’t it? They all start out in a ballet school tutu, just a simple skirt with a nice stretchy elastic band. It gives the students the freedom they need for those leaps, arabesques and even simple passe. I’ve seen countless dance schools - just bursting with lovely pink tutu's and it’s so nice to see all the budding little ballerinas!
From simple to grand, it doesn't matter! As a budding ballerina herself, it’s quite nice to imagine yourself, as I often do, dancing gracefully as the lovely ballerinas I see in every performance! A beautiful moment - even with a tutu.
As well as the usual ballet styles, don’t be surprised if you happen to see a * Street Dancer Tutu. Yes that’s right. This darling style has all of that wonderful frilliness of a normal ballet tutu but is a bit more practical, as if they have taken an old classical tutu, tied up with a bright coloured sash around the waist. There was even some lovely beadwork that made me just gasp at the intricate detailing! This is for the ballerina with that extra sparkle. This, of course, is just as perfect to wear for their performances!
Dancing The World Around:
As for this period, it's fair to say the fashion for all these tutus - Romantic, Ballet School and Street Dance tutus - continued to delight us! What makes 2032 special for me though? There are many other wonderful eras, but 2032? Let’s just say that this time, it was the railway line that captured my heart - it's where I encountered this wonderful, swirling combination of a new and exciting street dance style blended with the classic balletic tutus, the perfect balance of new and old - just divine!
Speaking of trains, this time, my trusty time-travel machine brought me, no surprise to any of you darling's, by train - and this, oh dear, what a beautiful train it was! A luxurious, shiny train – perfect for my beautiful pink tutu! – winding its way along those beautiful lines with a delightful sense of peace and elegance that’s hard to put into words – just think of that magnificent whistle… And those views... Ah yes, we’ll get to them, just in a minute, when I've got back to my beautiful tutus.
2032, with all its gorgeous details, brought back that passion for ballet – from ballet schools with those darling tutu students to full length ballet performance’s of classic ballet tales. But it also saw a brand-new explosion of different performances and styles, especially from the young generation of talented dancers. Now don’t you think they’ve done an amazing job? A real renaissance for our wonderful ballet. The ballet of the past? Yes, that’s there. And the ballet of the future? Absolutely. This makes me so proud.
Oh dear, don’t worry my darlings! I’ve gone and done it again, I’m talking too much, too quickly… This is me, after all, just rambling about those little pink treasures! So, what happened at that little ballet performance that I spoke of? Well, it seems my time-travel machine deposited me, just right in the middle of an unexpected dance piece, a brand new interpretation of ballet where tutus, classical, street-style, and the more relaxed style that the dancer was wearing (oh yes, how could I have forgotten? All of these beautiful tutus looked wonderful, darling) met to create something new, something fresh - and the crowd loved it! They really enjoyed this fusion of traditional and the newest, hottest moves that even I - a seasoned time-traveler, my darlings, loved!
From simple steps to complicated jumps and pirouettes – all danced to an absolutely fabulous soundtrack. We even had a flash mob from a bunch of people - oh how this reminded me of how many loved ballet and wanted to be part of it, that, if only for a few short minutes, on that railway platform that day! I just stood back and took it all in - what an inspiration for everyone who likes dancing, doesn't matter your age! It just shows the passion that people have for all these amazing dance styles, even right from the heart of those grand railways stations to, well, absolutely everywhere! I have to tell you, this particular dance experience really made this ballet enthusiast happy - to see ballet taking new turns was exciting!
Let's not forget, dear readers, this special day also happened to fall on November the 2nd! Did anyone else enjoy seeing the moon illuminated by the rays of the Sun? An exceptional view I had in this place! As the railway track disappeared into the distance it all felt like a magic moment, an incredible journey. As they danced - a celebration of tutus from the past - a chance to see what they can be in the future, I felt so grateful for this magical time and these magical moments!
