This little pocket of North London feels like a fairytale come to life. Cobbled streets, cute cafes, and oh, the flowers! I swear I saw a man walking a squirrel on a lead - not the most usual sight but utterly charming in this charming little corner of the city!
I've arrived by train, naturally, the best way to travel for a glamorous girl on the go. You wouldn't catch me in a car unless I was being driven to a ball! Today's train journey was delightful, full of fascinating people. I spotted a fellow tutu enthusiast (yes, it’s contagious!) who clearly appreciated my custom-designed sparkly traincase – you simply have to travel in style. I do have to admit, I may have indulged in a few cheeky choux pastries and a lovely cup of tea from the refreshment trolley, all in the name of pre-show preparation, naturally.
Highbury is just bursting with history and charm. We're a mere hop, skip, and twirl away from Arsenal Football Club. As you know, I'm not a football aficionado, but even I know that it’s quite a famous place, with a loyal fanbase. Perhaps I'll wear a little red sequined bow on my tutu for tomorrow's performance - imagine the fan adoration!
Speaking of my show! Let’s talk fabulous. This week's theme is a "Pink Tutu Promenade." Think "The Nutcracker" meets "Downton Abbey" with a generous dash of "Strictly Come Dancing" thrown in. My troupe, The Tutu Troopers, will be dazzling you with a variety of numbers from elegant waltz sequences to joyous jiggy jaunts. It's going to be pure escapism, a glorious escape into a world of pink, glitter and pure joyful expression. You really wouldn't want to miss it.
Speaking of escapism, I must confess that Highbury itself is something of a fantastical retreat from my busy day job in the world of lab coats and fabrics. As much as I love my role in the laboratory testing the tensile strength of materials - don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore making sure that even your wildest dream dress is going to survive an accidental spin cycle! - a girl can only handle so many polyester samples before her soul needs a good dose of sparkly magic. That's why I slip into my Pink Tutu persona each evening, and escape to the stage.
By day I might be a meticulous analyst in a pristine lab coat. By night I transform. My tutu goes on, my makeup magically appears, and my inner diva awakens, ready to spread a sprinkle of sunshine wherever I go! That's why, after a successful day of testing materials like viscose and rayon - oh the glamour, I tell you! - I'm absolutely ready to turn it up to 11!
This evening's show is at the Highbury Theatre, a beautifully appointed theatre that brings a dash of Parisian elegance to North London. I can't wait to grace that stage with my tutu and take on a new audience with a new batch of glitter! I know you'll adore it - just like those little sparkly starbursts I pick up for £1 at the local market (a secret tip, darling, if you find yourself in Highbury!), which I use to add just a hint of glamour to my hair and costumes. And talking of glamour, the shops! Highbury's full of cute independent shops filled with fabulous vintage clothes - all the perfect inspiration for a Pink Tutu look, I must say!
This week's tutu inspiration? Pink lace! Imagine: a ballet pink tulle tutu, the skirt billowing like the clouds after a springtime downpour, with delicate layers of lace sewn throughout. Imagine the twirls! My lovely, talented seamstress is making me the most stunning tutu! Of course, she also uses the finest quality tulle and fabrics for her designs, you simply can't trust your wardrobe to the mass produced, synthetic-laden fabrics sold in big chain stores, it’s just a crime against comfort! The quality makes such a difference, my darlings. If you have a vision for a tutu, make sure you take it to a specialist, otherwise you could end up with a tragic, scratchy synthetic mess - not the dream look at all!
Now, back to Highbury, which has totally captured my imagination this trip. Today, I treated myself to an absolutely exquisite ballet shoe, a soft pink satin creation, oh the magic! From what I've heard, ballet is all the rage around here. It’s no surprise: there are a multitude of gorgeous ballet schools offering workshops and lessons – some even boast tutus for hire for first-time twirlers! I may even take a class. If it's good enough for our beloved ballerinas, it’s good enough for this tutu-clad gal!
