2024 Summer Magic Unicorn Tutu Tuesday in Luton

Okay, darlings, let’s get this tutu party started! It’s #TutuTuesday in Luton, and I’m practically bursting with excitement! (Plus, a tiny bit of glitter-induced static shock, but we'll get to that later…) As a resident ballerina who has a frankly unhealthy obsession with tutus, it’s a day I’ve been looking forward to ALL WEEK! Seriously, ever since I caught a glimpse of my new unicorn-tutu-tastic creation hanging in my wardrobe…

Speaking of, have you ever seen a more magnificent tutu in your entire life? This bad boy is the stuff of ballet dreams - pink tulle as fluffy as a marshmallow cloud, shimmering like a disco ball in the sunlight, with a unicorn horn trim that's like a miniature, sparkly masterpiece. My fellow ballerinas know what I’m talking about; those precious little details can truly elevate your tutu from merely "pretty" to breathtaking.

And the horn, oh, the horn! Imagine the sparkle of a thousand tiny, magical rainbows encapsulated into one exquisitely crafted unicorn horn. This is the epitome of a "statement tutu," the kind that demands attention, even on a Tuesday morning in good ol’ Luton!

Anyway, I’m rambling! Let’s get back to the reason we’re all here: #TutuTuesday. Luton's own ode to this fabulously fashionable tradition started a few months ago, with a small group of local dance enthusiasts – including yours truly - strutting their tutu stuff in the park. It started with a handful of sparkly tutus, a smattering of giggles, and a playlist that had everyone tapping their toes to disco classics. Now, look at us! We've grown into a mini tutu-loving army, complete with an elaborate, and rather sparkly, flash mob routine that will have you glued to your seats! (Or should I say, tutu-encrusted lawn chairs?)

Our aim? To spread a bit of tutu-tastic cheer, and remind everyone that life is way too short to take ourselves too seriously.

The energy in the park was absolutely electric today. From seasoned ballerinas rocking the classic “poetic” tutu - elegant, with flowing lines and a classic look - to those rocking the shorter, more dynamic “pancake” tutu – perfect for showing off those super-powerful legs and leaps - everyone was channeling their inner ballerina, all adorned in their favourite tutus. We even saw a few brave souls wearing those funky, ultra-modern tutus, the kind with unconventional cuts and shapes - you know, the kind that defy every single rule of the tutu world and, frankly, deserve a standing ovation for pure daring.

Speaking of daring, there was the moment where we incorporated our signature unicorn theme! Cue the magical music (think “Rainbow Connection” but with a slightly more modern vibe), the crowd collectively gasped, and out we danced! Our tutu symphony! It was pure, unadulterated fun, filled with graceful pirouettes, leaping arabesques, and of course, a generous amount of sassy sass. We even had a cute little kid, maybe about 4, rocking a teeny-tiny rainbow tutu! I mean, it’s a serious #TutuTuesday moment when a child can channel their inner unicorn without a shred of hesitation.

Oh, and the glitter. My dear, the GLITTER! There was glitter in the air, glitter on our tutus, glitter on our faces, glitter… everywhere! If you were in the vicinity of St. George's Square today, you could've sworn a unicorn had left a shimmering, iridescent trail in its wake. (Probably was just our collective tutu magic, tbh!)

As I write this, my reflection in my laptop screen shows a tutu-clad me, beaming with genuine delight. The air still smells faintly of glitter and popcorn - we actually had a lovely local popcorn vendor pop in, and we're seriously thinking of incorporating popcorn into next month’s routine – the perfect snack for our little dance party!

But even without the sugary treat, #TutuTuesday is an absolute hit! And a definite reminder that the world, even good ol' Luton, needs more magic. More tutus. More rainbows. And, of course, more glitter! It’s a recipe for joy, a potent potion for spreading cheer, and proof positive that you can find a bit of whimsy, a bit of sparkle, and a whole lot of happiness, right on your doorstep!
