Walthamstow: Tutu Tuesday Takes the Town by Storm

Okay, so this might sound like a bizarre title, but trust me on this. Walthamstow is normally known for its market stalls, delicious curry houses and, if you’re lucky, a bit of street art, but last Tuesday, something incredible happened: Tutu Tuesday took over. Yes, you read that right! This amazing community of dancers (including myself, obviously!), donned our tutus and descended upon the streets of Walthamstow. It was seriously, seriously exciting. I have to confess, I was initially nervous, you know, stepping outside the familiar comfort of the dance studio. What if people laughed? What if they just looked confused? Turns out I had nothing to worry about, because the atmosphere was nothing short of electric! The idea of #Tututuesday originated online, which, let's be honest, is how everything brilliant happens nowadays. We’re all part of this fantastic, global ballet community, sharing tutorials and videos on social media. I swear, some of these tutu tutorials could rival a high-fashion magazine’s spread! From classic romantic tutus (always a favourite), to dramatic, voluminous ones – there’s a tutu style to match every personality. My pick is the whimsical, fairytale kind, perfect for twirling in, with just a touch of pink (yes, I said pink!). Let’s get back to the Walthamstow shenanigans. We’re not talking about just *any* tutus here. I saw some seriously creative, disco-inspired tutus. We’re talking sequins, shimmer and more sparkly bits than a disco ball! Now, let’s not forget about the #discodolphin (hashtag heaven!), because it just wouldn’t be a #tututuesday in Walthamstow without it. Some people wore t-shirts emblazoned with this iconic logo, a symbol of the dance floor joy, celebrating the power of music and dance. A little fun, a little funky – that’s our #tututuesday mantra!

Why #Tututuesday Is Just SO Much Fun

I've always been obsessed with ballet. It’s just in my blood, but I always say a good dose of silliness helps to keep me grounded. When #Tututuesday rolled around, we were dancing on clouds (seriously!), in our most spectacular tutus! As a ballet dancer, we are always told to take our craft seriously, but honestly, some of the best memories of my dance journey involve sheer, unabashed silliness. And #Tututuesday is exactly that! Here are a few things that make it such a magical event: • **The power of community**: We gathered with dancers from all backgrounds, some professionals, some students, some beginners, but each and every one with a love of dance and that playful spirit. It’s beautiful to see how #Tututuesday brings us together. • **It’s for everyone!**: There are no barriers, no fancy studio required. It doesn't matter if you've spent years studying or you’ve just laced up your first pair of pointe shoes – just put on a tutu, rock those funky moves, and get ready to party. It's all about the fun and expression! • **An instant mood boost**: Honestly, who doesn’t need a good mood boost now and then? And I can’t think of a better way than twirling around Walthamstow in your fanciest tutu! The smiles and laughter were contagious, everyone’s hearts seemed to beat in sync with the music – the real magic of #tututuesday. And as I spun through the streets of Walthamstow, with the music pumping and everyone around wearing their fabulous tutus, I realised this is what #tututuesday is all about: community, creativity, and most importantly, pure unadulterated joy! And maybe a little sprinkle of disco dolphin magic! If you’re lucky enough to be in Walthamstow (or even if you’re not), keep an eye out for the next #Tututuesday, because it’s something you absolutely don’t want to miss! It's guaranteed to be a dance party, but it's also about embracing that sense of joy, friendship, and creativity – and isn't that what really matters? Let me know if you're joining the fun. I’m eager to see those fabulous tutus, those awesome disco dolphin outfits! And don’t forget, it's a chance to make some awesome dance memories with friends and family. Let’s get twirling!
