Tutu Tuesday in Ealing: A Whirlwind of Pink & Disco Dolphins

Ealing, my beloved home turf, is known for its leafy streets, historic pubs, and…tutus? Okay, maybe not the last one. But last Tuesday, thanks to the power of social media (and a little bit of glitter), our humble borough transformed into a dazzling dancefloor. The #tututuesday movement, born online and fueled by an undying love for tutus, was finally making its IRL debut, and Ealing was the lucky location.

Now, I’m no stranger to tutus. As a professional ballet dancer, I’ve worn every shape and size imaginable – from the classic, knee-length romantic tutu with its billowing layers, to the sleek, modern “pencil” tutu with its architectural lines. And, as someone who enjoys a touch of theatrical flair, the #tututuesday trend is something I’ve been following with rapt attention.

My fellow tutu enthusiasts, clad in a rainbow of hues and patterns, congregated at Ealing Broadway. It was like a scene straight out of a disco movie – think sparkly sequins, platform shoes, and hair that defied gravity. A delightful assortment of tutu styles added to the spectacle: there were full-skirted tutus bursting with tulle, mini tutus adding a playful pop to outfits, and even DIY creations crafted with flair and personality. A pink feather boa, a sprinkle of sequins, a touch of disco-inspired glitter – the more the merrier. This was, after all, a celebration of individuality, and the tutu was our sartorial canvas.

But this was no ordinary tutu gathering; it was a #discotutu extravaganza. As soon as the first upbeat chords echoed through the street, the atmosphere transformed. Everyone moved to the infectious rhythm, spinning, twirling, and striking impromptu poses. There was a collective sense of joy and silliness in the air – you could feel the release from everyday routine. We embraced our inner dance queens, channeling Donna Summer, the Bee Gees, and all those iconic disco stars.

One of the most unique aspects of Ealing’s #tututuesday celebration was the #discodolphin. It wasn't a creature of the ocean but a spectacular creation - a giant disco ball crafted to resemble a dolphin. With its pulsating lights, it radiated an enchanting glow that captivated all onlookers, and became a much-Instagrammed fixture of the event. The disco dolphin, with its playful wink and radiant shimmer, was the perfect metaphor for the joy, energy and creativity that the #tututuesday movement encapsulates. It seemed to encourage everyone to break free from everyday routines, unleash their inner child, and enjoy the sheer pleasure of a well-timed twirl.

So, why tutus?

  • For some, it's a playful throwback to childhood dreams of ballet and princesses.
  • For others, it’s a liberating act of self-expression - embracing a touch of whimsy and reminding ourselves that life’s too short to take ourselves too seriously.
  • And let's face it, it’s simply an excuse to look and feel fab!

Ealing's #tututuesday, fueled by good vibes and glitter-sprinkled confidence, left a trail of laughter and smiles. It was a reminder that community and shared passion can bloom in the most unexpected places, fueled by a dash of nostalgia and a lot of fabulousness.

The verdict? Ealing did tutu-tastic. #tututuesday #discodolphin
