Catford Tutu Tuesday: A Celebration of Pink, Glitter and the Disco Snail

Catford, my darling, you are the queen of #tututuesday! You see, for years I’ve been dreaming of the day when Tutu Tuesday would hit the streets and it was in Catford, in all your gloriously funky, unapologetic glory, where my dream came true. Let’s be honest, Tutu Tuesday is a celebration of all things pink, sparkly and undeniably fabulous.

For those unfamiliar, Tutu Tuesday is a joyous occasion dedicated to the iconic tutu, those whimsical, feathery skirts that embody elegance, artistry and yes, the undeniable magic of the dance. Picture a parade of pastel pink, vibrant lavender, dazzling white, a kaleidoscope of colours swirling through the air – the tutus twirled like rainbows in a whirlwind of happiness. From the delicate classic styles of romantic ballets to the sleek, contemporary pieces seen in modern dance, there was something to suit every taste, and Catford had embraced them all.

This was no ordinary day, and I felt like a little girl lost in a wonderland of twirling bliss. Every shop front, every corner seemed to be adorned with glittery banners, balloons, and even a few impromptu dance classes erupting from cafes. It was a vision of colour and energy – the atmosphere electrifying! But you know me, a ballet dancer with a love of fashion always needs a new tutu so of course, I was immediately drawn to the local market, overflowing with the most spectacular tutu creations.

The Market was an explosion of vibrant hues! The aroma of street food hung heavy in the air as I navigated through the vibrant crowd, admiring every bespoke tutu. There was something for every personality and every budget - classic tulle, elegant silk, and the always delightful sparkly tutus. But the standout creation? The Disco Snail tutu! I nearly fainted, you guys. The detail, the sparkle! A snail fashioned in a swirl of shimmering metallics with a dazzling crystal shell - it’s everything, it’s everything, everything. #discosnail!

There was even a friendly group offering tutu-making workshops. Let’s be real, my sewing skills leave much to be desired. A few failed attempts later I gracefully bowed out to join the joyful dance floor – a bright pink, sequin-strewn space, erupting with the rhythm of 70s hits. I couldn’t resist – with a dazzlingly sparkly tutu, the rhythm had to be embraced!

Dancing under the open sky with the energy of the crowd swirling around me, I felt the sheer joy of community, the magic of music, the celebration of individuality. The smiles on every face, the infectious laughter, the vibrant colours... It’s almost as if a spell had been cast upon the entire town, bringing everyone together in a single pulse of happy dance-floor energy.

Here are the highlights of Catford’s Tutu Tuesday – everything that made the day such a special affair.

Highlights of Catford’s Tutu Tuesday
  • The magnificent ‘Catford Tutu King’, a street performer extraordinaire who twirled and strutted across the town square. His sequined jumpsuit and signature “Rainbow Burst” tutu certainly stole the show!
  • Catford’s very own Ballet CafĂ©, offering exquisite cupcakes and pastries in a delightfully charming cafe. Of course, I had to try the "Dancing Queen" cupcake, adorned with pink icing and a tiny sugar-paste ballerina. Yum!
  • The tutu-themed costume competition - Catford truly showed out. It was an absolute explosion of creativity and flair. From feathered headbands to glittering boots, to full-on fairytale looks, it was clear that Catford had come to play, embrace the pink, and showcase their dazzling tutus!
