Tutu Tuesday in Southall: Where the Disco Snail Took Over
Oh, my fellow tutu enthusiasts, what a day! Southall's annual Tutu Tuesday brought the glitter and glam in a way only Southall can. As a professional dancer and proud devotee of all things sparkly, Tutu Tuesday is always a highlight on my calendar. It's a chance to throw on my favourite tutu (a soft pink tulle confection with a little bit of sequined sass), let loose with fellow dance lovers, and remind everyone that tutus are truly for every body.
Now, you may be thinking, "Tutu Tuesday in Southall? What's that all about?" Well, it's not just about tutus. It's about bringing a bit of joyful chaos, vibrant colour, and playful spirit to a bustling Southall town centre. Think street parades, funky tunes, and a real feeling of community - with tutus. Lots of tutus. It's an explosion of pink, a symphony of swish, a kaleidoscope of dance and delight.
This year's Tutu Tuesday was all about embracing our inner disco divas. The theme was “Disco Snail” and believe me, it did not disappoint. The whole town transformed into a swirling, twirling wonderland of shimmering sequins and psychedelic patterns. I saw every tutu imaginable - the classic, the romantic, the edgy. There were tutus in every shade, from bold neon hues to calming pastels, with everything from shimmering fabric to playful feathers adorning their fluffy brilliance.
My absolute favourite moment was when I caught sight of a little girl, barely four years old, strutting down the street in a sparkly pink tutu, completely engrossed in the music, mimicking the moves of a troupe of professional dancers. The joy radiating from her was contagious! The fact that a day like Tutu Tuesday could inspire such genuine joy in someone so young, is what makes this event so special.
There were countless dance workshops taking place throughout the day. From salsa to hip-hop, contemporary to ballet, everyone was getting in on the dance frenzy. We had tutus for every taste, style and occasion – it was fabulous to see a real range of people from different ages and backgrounds participating, all coming together to celebrate dance and expression.
There was definitely a “disco” theme in the air. It wasn’t just the music – it was the attitude. Everyone was dancing with infectious energy, laughing and making new friends. I'm pretty sure I saw someone do the robot in a feathered pink tutu! Now that's the spirit I'm talking about! This was no ordinary Tuesday; this was Tutu Tuesday!
It wasn’t all about the dance either. I can't resist a bit of shopping when it comes to fashion. Let's just say, I scored some major fashion wins at the local vintage shops, picking up a couple of amazing disco-era sequin dresses and some seriously groovy shoes. Southall is such a great spot to find some real hidden treasures!
As I made my way back home, still buzzing from the day’s activities, I couldn’t help but think about the infectious energy and spirit of Tutu Tuesday. The day truly embodied everything I love about dance: its power to bring people together, its ability to uplift spirits and inspire creativity, and, of course, its utterly fantastic capacity for pure fun and escapism! I know I'll be back next year, with my dancing shoes and my very best tutu ready to go!
