Beckenham’s Tutu Tuesday: Where Pink Is the Colour and the Disco Ball is King

Tutu Tuesday, Beckenham’s own glorious ode to everything sparkly, feathered, and utterly fabulous, has officially arrived! Let me tell you, darlings, this wasn't your average Tuesday. From the moment I stepped onto Beckenham High Street, it was clear I wasn’t in Kansas anymore (or perhaps, I was in Kansas after Dorothy clicked her ruby slippers…you know, if Kansas was known for fabulous tutus and a sprinkle of disco fever).

And let me tell you, there were tutus aplenty! We're talking everything from the classic romantic tutu – picture that perfectly sculpted cone shape, swirling in the air – to the contemporary, a bit of a departure, maybe a sassy, asymmetric style with some fierce lines (imagine the "Black Swan" meets "Saturday Night Fever," if you will!). But the clear winner, the tutu that stole my heart (and every Insta-worthy moment) was, of course, pink. We’re talking all shades, from ballet pink to shocking pink – every blushing shade was represented!

Of course, no Tutu Tuesday is complete without a little disco. Think shimmering sequins, platforms, and the perfect side-ponytail for that hair-whipping good time. Let’s not forget about the ever-so-stylish glitter. Seriously, my phone case was covered in glitter just from walking through the high street, but that’s the Beckenham way, right? Embrace the shimmer!

I bumped into a real treat - a young boy, couldn’t have been more than eight, twirling away with a shimmering pink tutu and a pair of fuzzy slippers! This is exactly what makes Tutu Tuesday so special. You've got all ages, backgrounds, and styles uniting in the name of sparkly fun and that’s absolutely what I live for!

As I strolled through the high street, I caught glimpses of the "Disco Snail." It's a local icon. Imagine a snail, draped in tinsel and glitter, ready for the night. Let’s be honest, it just screamed “Beckenham!”

We also caught a glimpse of a legendary dancer – none other than, yes, you guessed it, Ms. Penelope Plum, rocking a custom pink tutu that literally took my breath away! She is, after all, a style icon – the embodiment of all that’s glam. And she really made that disco ball twinkle! (Okay, let’s be honest, that’s pretty much a given when Penelope Plum is in the building!)

To be completely honest, it wasn't all glitz and glam – the highlight of my day (I mean, after a delicious, gluten-free, shimmery pink cupcake – Beckenham doesn't do ordinary) was the group of children practicing their barre in the middle of the high street. And honestly, they were better than most "professional" dancers I’ve seen!

The enthusiasm was contagious, their smiles radiant – truly the embodiment of why Tutu Tuesday exists!

Here are some things I definitely took note of:

  • Pink tutus are a must-have!
  • The more sparkle the better. Glitter is not a choice. Glitter is a way of life.
  • A good time can be found on any street, in any city, on any Tuesday – just bring the tutus and the disco tunes.
  • Disco balls aren't just for nightclubs. Let's break down the barriers and hang 'em in the front yards, the shops, on the bus stop! We’re breaking rules here, darling, not following them.
  • Penelope Plum, of course, still has the dance moves (no surprise there). We all must aspire to dance like Penelope when we’re eighty.

If you're in Beckenham, don’t forget to check out the weekly happenings on Beckenham’s official page.

So there you have it, folks! Tutu Tuesday – where anything goes and everything sparkles. If you’re not a fan of glitter and glam – don't even try. It's going to be the pinkest, sparkliest, most fun Tuesday you’ve ever seen – promise!
