Worksop Goes Tutu-Crazy: A Disco Fever Dream on #TutuTuesday

Okay, darlings, you know how much I adore a good Tutu Tuesday. It’s a weekly ritual, a chance to ditch the boring jeans and embrace my inner prima ballerina, all whilst channeling a bit of disco glamour. So, when I heard that Worksop was hosting its very own Tutu Tuesday celebration, I knew I had to get involved. Pink feather boas, platform boots, and a healthy dose of glitter? I’m in!

As I stepped off the train and onto the bustling streets of Worksop, the infectious beat of a disco tune was pumping from every corner. People were dancing in the streets – mums with their toddlers in adorable, miniature tutus, pensioners doing the conga, even the local vicar was bopping along! It was like something out of a Saturday Night Fever scene, except instead of Studio 54, it was Worksop market square.

I was determined to get in on the action, but first, a little wardrobe update was needed. Luckily, I'd packed my new "Disco Diva" tutu, a hot pink masterpiece with a flowing tulle skirt and a delicate sequined bodice. I'd been saving it for a special occasion and this definitely fit the bill.

My heart was racing as I hit the pavement. There were people of all ages sporting tutus in every style imaginable – from classic, single-layer tutus to multi-tiered, voluminous masterpieces, all in a riot of colours. It was a sartorial explosion of femininity, glitter, and a touch of silly, all bound together by the sheer joy of celebrating movement and self-expression.

There was a buzz in the air, a feeling of unity and shared fun that extended far beyond the fashion. I watched kids shrieking with laughter as they played games in a specially-created “Tutu Playground” filled with giant, bouncy pink inflatables and a makeshift dance floor that had more than a few adults in tears from laughter. It was truly heartwarming to witness so much joy and freedom expressed through a shared love of dancing and twirling.

One of the highlights of the day was the "Tutu Walk,” where everyone paraded around Worksop in their finest tutus. We had tutus with pom poms, tutus with sequins, tutus with feathers – there was literally something for everyone, from the modest ballet lover to the full-on disco diva. I felt a rush of confidence as I joined the procession, strutting my stuff in my Disco Diva tutu.

Another big hit was the "Tutu Bake Off," a competition that attracted amateur bakers with some seriously impressive skills. I have to admit, it was tempting to indulge in a giant, sugar-dusted cupcake in the shape of a ballerina, but I saved my appetite for the “Disco Disco Dinner” – a pop-up restaurant serving up an all-out disco themed feast. It was complete with a light show, glitter bombs, and a soundtrack curated from the legendary Donna Summer, Bee Gees, and Gloria Gaynor. (Needless to say, there were plenty of dance breaks.)

But it wasn't all glitter and glam. Worksop embraced the quirky, too, with a 'Disco Snail Race’ that drew in a crowd larger than the usual audience for a local council meeting. This unique, whimsical event saw these shell-bound superstars compete for a place in the Disco Snail Hall of Fame. It was hilarious and truly captivating.

The day wrapped up with a spectacular "Disco Glitter Gala,” a full-on party complete with live music, disco balls, and a truly magnificent neon lights display that made the entire town sparkle. As the crowd danced the night away, I felt a surge of happiness, knowing that this was more than just a random gathering; it was a movement.

Worksop's #TutuTuesday event proved to me that dancing, and all the silly fun that goes along with it, has no age limit. It was a testament to the power of community, a celebration of self-expression, and a delightful reminder that a little glitter never hurts.

Tutu Style Tips

Feeling inspired to take on your own #Tututuesday adventures? Here’s my advice on achieving the perfect #discotutu look:

  • Choose your Tutu Wisely: From the classic, one-tier ballerina tutu to the multi-tiered, extravagant tutus with shimmering fabrics, the choice is yours. Go for a color and style that screams “YOU” and don’t be afraid to get creative.
  • Accessorize with Panache: Think feather boas, statement earrings, platform shoes, and, of course, plenty of sparkle.
  • Go Full Disco: Don’t hold back! Get ready to unleash your inner disco diva with vibrant colours, metallic accents, and hair-raising hairstyles. Remember, a disco-inspired look is all about embracing flamboyance, so don't shy away from adding some extra personality to your look.
  • Don’t Forget Your Music! No disco-tutu party is complete without a soundtrack of soulful grooves!

I can’t wait for the next Worksop #Tututuesday. This is a trend I can definitely get behind – and maybe a new hashtag: #DiscoSnail.
