Blackpool: A Tutu Tuesday Tale

Oh, Blackpool, you crazy, wonderful place! It's always a good time, but when you throw Tutu Tuesday into the mix? Let's just say it's a level of fabulousness I never knew I needed in my life. The vibe is electric, the energy contagious, and I can't stop smiling!

Today's Tutu Tuesday saw the streets absolutely buzzing with the most spectacular displays of twirling brilliance. You'd think it was the final night of Swan Lake in a disco ball factory, with everything from frilly, pink poofy tulle that looked straight out of the Moulin Rouge to minimalist black tutus, so sleek and sophisticated they were practically whispering, "I'm not a fashion faux pas, darling, just an edgy expression of ballet." There were even some daring souls who'd embraced the #discotutu trend - bright, vibrant, and radiating a retro sparkle. Seriously, folks, I saw a tutu that could literally be seen from space!

I felt a pang of regret not bringing my own tulle creations to wear – imagine the Instagram possibilities! My friend Lily has a bright yellow tutus with neon green sequins, so extra it’s almost impossible. I even thought of starting a new trend for ‘tutu street style’, a street photographer focused solely on Tutu Tuesday wearers. Maybe it's just a wild dream of mine, but who knows? I feel like a new era is upon us.

But I wasn't the only one who got caught up in the tutu mania. Every corner you turned, there was another person embracing the tulle. Some rocking out with disco moves that put Travolta to shame, others simply letting the sunshine hit their tutus just right. The joy and pure love for this annual event are contagious!

Here’s some of my favourite tutu sightings and observations from the day:

  • A gaggle of grannies in sequined pink tutus doing a synchronized dance routine in front of the iconic Blackpool Tower. Pure gold!
  • Two lads having a dance-off in full tutus, their friends filming for a TikTok, naturally. There were tears of laughter streaming down my face!
  • A disco-loving snail with a handmade disco ball on its back, who'd gotten so wrapped up in the atmosphere he’d missed his train back home, which I helped him find.

And then there was the man with a sparkly silver beard and a unicorn horn on his head - because, why not, right?! His purple and teal tutu seemed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding rainbow hues. This is why Blackpool is the ultimate tutu paradise.

So if you're ever feeling a little too serious or down in the dumps, just come to Blackpool and lose yourself in the joy of Tutu Tuesday. It's truly a day for everyone, every shape, and every size. Just leave your judgment at the door, put on a smile, and embrace the tulle. It's all part of the Blackpool magic!
