Tutu Tuesday in Plymouth: A Celebration of Colour, Sparkle, and Pride!
Hey gorgeous dance lovers, it's your girl, Holly, back with another blog post. Today is a special day - Tutu Tuesday, Plymouth Edition! This glorious day is all about celebrating the tutu, that iconic symbol of dance and elegance, in all its shimmering, fluffy glory.
You know me, I can’t resist a good opportunity to twirl. And what better way to celebrate the wonderful world of dance than with a dedicated day for tutus? I mean, imagine: the soft tulle, the delightful colours, the way they billow out as you leap, the ultimate in graceful attire! A tutu instantly transforms any outfit, adding a touch of whimsy and elegance. And it’s a fantastic excuse for some fabulous photos too.
Speaking of fabulous, the colour palette today is, of course, **PINK!** Think blush pink, fuchsia, flamingo, bubblegum – every shade of pink under the rainbow, just like my favourite outfit today. (You know I love pink!)
I can't help but get excited every time I see a tutu. They’re a symbol of joy, of beauty, and of creativity. But more than just a fashion item, the tutu is a symbol of strength and confidence for dancers around the world. For me, it’s like armour – it helps me find that inner confidence when I’m performing, knowing I’m embodying all that power and grace.
The city of Plymouth, where I’m posting from, is brimming with life today! I love seeing so many locals, both seasoned and amateur dancers, joining the Tutu Tuesday movement in the city. So many colours and styles – there’s something truly beautiful about how the classic silhouette can be reimagined.
What makes this even more special is seeing so many local shops getting involved, offering their own interpretations of the Tutu. From the classic fluffy pouter tutus of a traditional ballerina to the super glamorous sparkly designs that remind you of a 70s disco queen, the tutus today have just added this layer of magic to the streets. Plymouth’s a beautiful, historical city, but it’s even more vibrant when everyone’s in a tutu! It's truly a celebration of colour, sparkle, and pride!
And what’s more? We’re not just celebrating the artistry of the tutu – today we’re also showing our solidarity and love for our friends in the LGBTQ+ community. The tutu is a symbol of freedom, of self-expression, and of inclusivity - values that are essential for the LGBTQ+ community. It's a way to show your support and celebrate the diversity of our society.
In fact, this whole “Tutu Tuesday” started in the US a couple of years back as a way to show love and solidarity for the LGBTQ+ community - and this really resonates with me, it's a cause close to my heart. What could be better than putting on your brightest colours and your favourite tutus and going about your day spreading good vibes?
I’ve seen so many beautiful interpretations of the tutu on Instagram – the creativity never ceases to amaze me.
Here are just a few examples of the inspiring tutus I’ve spotted today that you can try at home!
- The classic pouter tutu: A timeless choice that will never go out of style. Go for a soft pink for a delicate, romantic look or a bolder pink if you’re going for a dramatic vibe.
- The layered tutu: Add some dimension with layers of tulle. Choose contrasting shades of pink, like bubblegum and flamingo, for a vibrant look or keep it monochrome for a sophisticated aesthetic. You can always find some really creative layering techniques for that extra pizzazz!
- The sparkly tutu: Who says you need to save your sparkle for evenings? Make your look pop with a shimmery tutu in every shade from fuchsia to pink glitter - the more glitter the better!
- The casual tutu: You can make tutus look casual! Go for a denim skirt that you pair with a pink tutu or, better still, use a tulle skirt with some layers in that signature pink and match it with a crop top – and don’t forget the sparkly platform shoes!
- The street-style tutu: Step up your fashion game with a tutu incorporated into your everyday outfit. Dress it up with a leather jacket and heeled boots for a bold look. Alternatively, embrace the colourful trend and combine it with pink sneakers and your favourite casual T-shirt. A great example of that was the gorgeous Plymouth family that were strutting their stuff, Dad rocking a tie, Mum with a sparkly pink tulle skirt, and their daughter in a beautiful pale pink ballerina tutu. They’re just a shining example of what makes Plymouth special today!
- The disco tutu: Get ready to boogie in this show-stopping tutu. Think full-length, with layers upon layers of tulle, topped off with some sequins and fringes. It’s everything you’d want for your night out, especially in this disco ball, strobe lighting era! Just get the platforms and some gold eyeliner and you’re good to go!
