Tutu Tuesday in Salford: #tututuesday #tutupride

It’s a gloriously sunny Tuesday in Salford, and the streets are buzzing. Not just with the usual Salford energy, but with a vibrant, twirling, tulle-filled energy. That’s right, folks – it’s Tutu Tuesday!

I woke up this morning feeling like I needed a bit of extra sparkle in my life. What better way to start the week than with a dance party for one, wearing a frilly, pink, tutu, that could only be described as “sparkly unicorn dreams” . My trusty, worn-in, black Converse, provided a little grunge to balance out the fabulousness.

And it turns out I wasn't the only one with a #tututuesday on their mind. Every where I looked – at the supermarket, on the bus, in the library (even the librarian was rocking a black tutu, it was truly magnificent!) - people were sporting tutus. Tutus of all styles – fluffy tutus, short tutus, ballerina-style tutus, even a few with rainbow coloured feathers. You name it, a tutu in Salford is all the rage. I must admit I especially loved seeing some grandads in their tutus. Now, that’s a bold statement for a Tuesday!

This wasn't just a random Tuesday; this was the day we decided to bring our inner sparkle to the streets and share a bit of joy with our Salford community. Let’s be honest, we need a little more joy in our world these days, and wearing a tutu – let's just say – it is the perfect antidote to stress!

I, for one, am definitely in love with this new movement! Tutus bring together people from all backgrounds, all walks of life. We were all dancing to the same beat today – even if our “dance moves” were wildly different! We didn't care if people thought we were crazy! As I said to the person who asked what on earth I was doing, I told him to, “Get a tutu and join in!” He looked at me , puzzled, for a second, then started to giggle. Within minutes he'd gone into the shop next door and emerged, proudly, sporting a rather fabulous pink and purple tutu. My day was officially made!

Now, what makes this extra special? Well, we were embracing the joy of self-expression. We were all about #tutupride, and by wearing a tutu, we showed we stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.

Here are some of the highlights of this truly unique Tuesday:

  • A "flash mob" on the Salford market square where a group of tutu-clad locals joined together for a disco-inspired dance routine – think, Bee Gees and the Village People but with even more tulle. It was simply epic!
  • A dog walker who decided a tutu would look perfectly fabulous on his golden retriever! (Turns out, it really did!)
  • A “Tutu and Coffee” morning at The Coffee Cup, where customers got to enjoy their favourite drinks while posing for a tutu photoshoot with friends!
  • An afternoon at The Playhouse theatre where they performed a special “Tutu Tuesdays” performance – a collection of classic ballet dances but with a twist and a few modern dances in the mix

This day showed me the true meaning of community and joy! We are all part of a larger human story, connected in ways we may not realise. By celebrating ourselves, we create a space where others feel accepted and free to do the same.

Here’s to many more Tutu Tuesdays! Here are just a few thoughts as we all dance into Wednesday

  • If you haven’t tried on a tutu yet, make it your mission to do so! You will not be disappointed – believe me.
  • Share the joy of #tututuesday! Tell your friends and family to wear a tutu for their own personal “tutu-Tuesday celebration .”
  • Don’t be afraid to dance! Let’s all move our bodies – no matter how terrible our dancing is, because who cares? It is all about the fun.

I, for one, will certainly be celebrating more #tututuesdays. As the quote says, "When life gives you tutus … put them on and dance!”
