Tutu Tuesday in Brixton: A Rainbow of Twirling and Glitter!

Today, my friends, was not just any Tuesday, it was Tutu Tuesday, and let me tell you, Brixton went all out! From the colourful stalls of the market to the buzzing energy of the Electric Avenue, every corner was bursting with twirling, shimmering, and joyous energy! It felt like the whole community was wrapped in a glorious embrace of positivity and acceptance - something that’s become a real hallmark of Brixton!
For those of you unfamiliar with the glorious phenomenon that is #tututuesday, allow me to enlighten you. It's a celebration of self-expression, community, and a bit of light-hearted fun. Think sequins, tulle, and lots of colourful joy - basically a sparkly, graceful escape from the daily grind! Now, imagine that infectious energy swirling through the bustling heart of Brixton… I know, right? It was magical!
From the seasoned pro to the first-time tutu enthusiast, there was a beautiful mix of twirlers gracing Brixton’s streets. There were the classic romantic tutu wearers, floating like delicate ballerinas in billowing layers of tulle. These majestic, fluffy delights never cease to take my breath away. Then there were the shorter, sassy tutus that skimmed the knees and sparkled with every turn! These modern takes on the traditional were truly exhilarating to watch - they evoked a youthful, playful spirit that’s perfect for strutting down Brixton's vibrant streets! And don't even get me started on the colour! A dazzling array of hues danced in the sunlight, creating a visual symphony that felt like pure celebration! Pink, my favourite colour, was a stand out – it simply made everyone glow! There were bold pinks, blush pink, bubblegum pinks – even some gorgeous lilac and violet! Oh, it was spectacular!
What truly warmed my heart were the little ones participating. Seeing toddlers in their teeny tutus giggling as they attempted their first twirls, and teens creating choreographed dance routines – that was truly special. It showed the power of Tutu Tuesday - that feeling of unbridled joy is infectious. A few older gents even had a go! You know you’re having a good time when the fellas are twirling on the dance floor!
Now, a Tutu Tuesday wouldn’t be complete without a playlist bursting with feel-good tunes. Thankfully, Brixton didn’t disappoint. The air was alive with upbeat disco vibes, creating the perfect backdrop for twirling! The Bee Gees, Donna Summer, ABBA – it was like stepping straight into a retro disco, and everyone was shimmying along! It’s amazing how much fun dancing with strangers can be!
Brixton really knows how to make a celebration a spectacle! Every event has this amazing sense of community – whether it's the local market, a street party or a festive event like Tutu Tuesday.
