Tutu Tuesday in Twickenham: A Whirlwind of Frills and Fun!

Hey there, fashionistas! It’s your girl, Poppy, here, bringing you all the latest updates from the world of dance and, of course, tutus! As you all know, Tuesday is the one day of the week that's all about celebrating the most fabulous piece of dancewear – the tutu!

This week, the Tutu Tuesday action was happening right here in Twickenham, a vibrant little town that’s surprisingly brimming with style and an amazing community spirit. From the moment I stepped off the train, I felt the air crackling with excitement. People were decked out in their most glorious tutus, ready to spread joy and celebrate everything that’s fantastic about this iconic garment.

As always, the day was bursting with diversity! There were tutus in all shapes and sizes – from the classic romantic, full-bodied tutus with tiers of soft tulle that just beckon you to twirl, to the sassy, cropped mini tutus that practically scream 'disco diva!'

Speaking of disco, this year’s Tutu Tuesday in Twickenham theme was all about 'Dancing Through The Decades!' The High Street was literally buzzing with life, adorned with rainbow flags and shimmering disco balls, reflecting the vibrant spirit of LGBTQ+ Pride. It felt like stepping onto the set of a 70’s dance film!

There were even some super cute little tutu enthusiasts strutting their stuff – little ballerinas twirling their pink, tulle dreams with pride and joy. It’s a true testament to how the love for tutus transcends ages and backgrounds.

Of course, I wasn’t just a spectator, I joined the fun too! Dressed in a sparkly, vintage-inspired tutu, with the perfect touch of pink and glitz (a Poppy signature, obviously!), I found myself on a stage performing a few pirouettes, inspiring the crowd to do the same. The energy was simply electrifying!

It was the perfect way to celebrate not just dance, but self-expression, uniqueness, and above all, inclusivity. There’s something about tutus that has this magical power to empower, to bring people together, to ignite creativity and to inspire joy. They really are more than just garments – they’re symbols of possibility and pure, unadulterated fun!

Some of my favourite moments from the day included:

  • The 'Tutu Runway' was amazing! It showcased the best of Twickenham’s Tutu creativity – with tutus created out of everything imaginable, from recycled materials to feathers to fabric scraps! One amazing outfit incorporated even a lampshade as part of the costume. Pure genius! It was also fantastic seeing some people make a real statement, using the tutu as a bold fashion statement.
  • The "Tutu Workshop", a free, hands-on event where kids and adults could make their own mini tutus using ribbon, felt, sequins and craft glitter. It was so heartwarming seeing little hands decorating their mini creations, each with its own unique design and style. I mean, isn't it so true? Tutu making is for all!
  • A real highlight, the 'Tutu Parade!' People of all ages, decked out in their best tutus, took over Twickenham High Street for a vibrant and joyful dance procession! The laughter and cheers resonated throughout the street, truly encapsulating the energy of the day.

And what’s a Tutu Tuesday without the chance to win some fabulously themed prizes? There was a raffle where people could win Tutu-inspired gifts, from dazzling makeup sets to glittery tutus. The money raised will be donated to the local dance academy, helping to fund dance workshops for kids from less-privileged backgrounds, an initiative I fully support. Let's make sure dancing is accessible to all, not just the lucky few.

So, that was Tutu Tuesday in Twickenham! It was a day of vibrant colours, sparkling smiles, and dancing under a sky full of glittery stars (ok, maybe not really glittery stars – it was a typical, sunny Tuesday. But a girl can dream!) It was a wonderful reminder of the magic and power that comes when we celebrate each other, and ourselves, in all our fabulous glory!
