Tutu Tuesday in Ellesmere Port: A Whirlwind of Colour and Pride

It’s Tutu Tuesday, babes, and the sun is shining in Ellesmere Port. What does that mean? It means it’s time for glitter, it’s time for sequins, and it’s time for some good ol’ fashioned tutu pride! Yes, you heard that right – today is all about celebrating the iconic garment of the dance world: the tutu! But today’s not about some stuffy, traditional performance at the Royal Opera House; we’re bringing the tutu into the streets of Ellesmere Port and letting it loose on the world. It’s about finding your inner prima ballerina, channeling your own unique flair, and unleashing a kaleidoscope of colour and creativity. After all, a tutu is more than just a costume; it's a statement!

Okay, so where do I even begin? Picture this: walking down the bustling streets of Ellesmere Port and what do you see? Well, you might be used to the regular suspects: shoppers clutching bags of discounted groceries, people heading to the market, families picking up takeaway fish and chips. But this Tuesday is a little different. Every other person you see has some form of tutu adorning their outfit. Now, I'm not talking about your traditional ballet-style tutu with its delicate tulle layers and classical form; we’re talking the whole spectrum! I’m talking a flamboyant fuchsia feather-boasted tutu that screams ‘fierce’ as it struts down the road with the strut of a disco queen, alongside a denim tutu adorned with pin badges from all the bands you’ve seen live in sweaty, dark club spaces and topped off with a perfectly pink pair of Doc Martens.

I know, I know, a denim tutu?! Is this a thing? It is indeed! There's nothing you can’t make a tutu out of in 2023! From everyday materials to bold patterns and recycled fabrics – your imagination is the limit, darlings. But it’s not all about the fabrics and embellishments. It's about confidence. It’s about reclaiming a symbol that was once confined to the stage and embracing it in everyday life, with pride and panache. It’s about letting loose, stepping out of your comfort zone and celebrating what makes you unique – even if that means rocking a sparkling blue tutu with a rainbow sequin headband. Let’s be real – sometimes you just have to let your inner diva loose!

Ellesmere Port's Tutu Tuesday scene was alive with laughter, creativity, and most importantly – positivity! There was a heartwarming air of community spirit amongst the tutu wearers, as strangers stopped to compliment each other on their styles, snapped pictures together, and generally shared a mutual love for all things sparkly and whimsical. As I observed the bustling street scene and the infectious energy it carried, I knew I was experiencing something extraordinary. There was a kind of electricity in the air, a powerful, liberating force emanating from this collective, shared embrace of the extraordinary and embracing individuality through a singular, magical piece of fabric! #TutuPride!

But Tutu Tuesday isn’t just a celebration of fashion; it's also a powerful statement of individuality and LGBTQ+ inclusivity! A tutu is a powerful symbol for me; it's a symbol of artistic expression, individuality, breaking boundaries, and embracing the power of performance to uplift and inspire others. And what better way to celebrate these ideas than in a colourful whirlwind of tutus that express every spectrum of the human experience!

What does the future hold for Ellesmere Port's Tutu Tuesday?

This movement, fueled by a wave of tutu pride, will sweep through the streets of Ellesmere Port with every Tuesday, a testament to our city’s spirit and individuality, forever! But that's not all – it’s going to be contagious, a wave of tutu energy set to captivate hearts and inspire minds across the country. Yes, just you wait. Next Tuesday, you'll see tutu-wearing people not only in Ellesmere Port, but everywhere from the streets of London to the charming towns of Scotland. It’s about spreading the message of acceptance and expressing individuality, wherever you go and whatever you wear. #TutuTuesday, darling!

Here's a glimpse of some of my favourite moments from Tutu Tuesday in Ellesmere Port:

  • An amazing, young ballet student dressed in a classic pale pink tutu. It looked perfect for the stage! But she was paired with bright pink boots that matched the feather-boas on her tiny, sparkling bag. That was the perfect juxtaposition of elegant tradition and playful modernity and it stole my heart! I really loved her style because she combined different eras of the tutu - her tutu could have come straight off the stage in the late 1900s and those shoes screamed 1980s. And that juxtaposition made her outfit the perfect representation of everything I love about Tutu Tuesday!
  • Then there was this pair of adorable kids dressed as a pirate and a fairy. Now, who'd have thought that pairing would have looked so fantastic! They both looked ecstatic and I just loved the whole concept. What made this extra magical was that they had matching tutus! A black satin tutu adorned with an eye patch for the little pirate and a pale green layered tulle fairy tutu topped off with tiny iridescent butterfly wings. What’s not to love about that?
  • This middle aged woman wearing an eye-catching emerald-green layered tutu – the tulle billowed in the light breeze as she walked - it was a stunningly gorgeous sight! The emerald green was an unusual choice for a tutu but she had totally made it her own. She finished her look with black tights and some silver gladiator sandals. So on-trend for a Tuesday in Ellesmere Port!

You know what? After writing about this Tutu Tuesday experience, I've really started to consider making my own denim tutu for the next one. I’m definitely inspired to do some more research on this trend – I think I’m going to visit some vintage clothing shops to source my fabric and have a rummage around my drawers for some inspiring sequins and accessories. But before I begin sewing, let’s go back to what really makes a tutu – It’s the confident strut. It’s a smile that is a mile wide. It's the feeling of pride. Let your Tutu shine, baby! #Tututuesday #tutupride.
